🍂 As we’re coming into Autumn, please don’t forget about your feet as you pack away your sandals and break out your cosy boots!

Colder, wetter weather can make feet more vulnerable to dryness, cracking, and even fungal infections if they’re not kept warm and dry.

🧦 Choose wool socks for warmth and breathability, and pair them with weather-appropriate footwear to keep feet dry.

💧 Don’t forget regular foot care and moisturising – autumn air (and central heating) can dry out the skin, leading to rough patches, cracked heels, and discomfort. A good foot cream helps keep your skin soft, and protected.

👣 Healthy, happy feet will keep you moving comfortably all year round, not just when you’re off on your summer holidays!

It’s a pre-reading kind of day! 📚

Very much looking forward to learning from the masters Ian Reilly and Belinda Longhurst this weekend. I’ll be updating my local anaesthetic qualification and taking on the new skill of verruca needling.

Watch this space, I’ll soon be offering this service in clinic 👣

“But you’re just cutting my toenails!”

I hear this a lot, but when you’re seeing a podiatrist, even a simple treatment like nail care needs to be done safely and with your full medical picture in mind. Your feet don’t just exist in isolation, your overall health matters!

The same way your dentist will insist on an up to date medical history, so should your podiatrist, your physiotherapist, and anyone else carrying out healthcare related treatments.

Certain conditions such as diabetes or poor circulation, and medications such as blood thinners or steroids, can impact how I treat your feet.

If you want clinical foot care from a qualified podiatrist, these forms aren’t optional, they’re part of providing the safe, professional treatment you deserve.

Thinking of a Fish Pedicure on holiday? Think again! 😳

Having just gotten back from a trip to Spain, I was pretty icked out by the number of open front salons offering ‘fish pedicures’ and even more horrified by how busy they were with tourists.

While fish pedicures might seem like a quirky holiday treat, they come with serious hygiene and ethical concerns that most people don’t realise.

🦠🍄 The water isn’t changed between customers, meaning bacterial and fungal infections can spread easily, increasing your risk of athlete’s foot, verrucae, cellulitis, and even hepatitis.

🐟 Unlike tools in a regulated clinic, these little fish (Garra rufa) can’t be sterilised between treatments - see above for infection risks!

💔 Aside from the hygiene implications, many of these poor fish are kept in inhumane, overcrowded conditions with no enrichment. They may even be starved to encourage them to nibble at dead skin.

🛑 In short, those fish and your feet deserve better - do not encourage this practice!

If you’re looking to care for your feet, opt for proper foot hygiene, supportive footwear, and schedule a professional podiatry check-up when you’re home.

May is Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Month — and your feet need attention too!
Skin cancer, including melanoma, can develop in often-overlooked places like the soles of your feet, between the toes, and under or around the toenails.

Look out for:
• Dark streaks or spots under the toenails (not linked to trauma)
• New or changing moles or pigmented spots on the feet
• Sores that don’t heal
• Lumps, scaly patches, or unusual growths

These signs can be easy to miss — and early detection is critical. If you notice anything unusual, don’t wait!
