Did you know that C Sections have been performed with success since ancient times? Over the centuries this surgery has been perfected, and is now considered a normal way of delivering a baby.
🌸 According to the Scottish Gov website around 2 out of every 5 live singleton births result in a c section, with roughly 1/5 being elective and 1/5 being unplanned
🌸 In reality this means that potentially one in five women birth via an emergency c section, this is surgery that potentially they haven't prepared for.
🌸 To me these seem like high numbers, and indeed I was one of them. I am not questioning the prevalence of c section, but I do question, why, given the high chance of birth resulting in c section, is there so little information out there to prepare us for this eventuality.
🌸 With better awareness and preparation of this surgery, we can get rid of the stigma of a c section, and improve the outcomes for parents who find themselves in this situation. We can also improve the experience for the parents. If every eventuality is planned for then an emergency c section can still be a positive experience where you retain an element of control, with choices can be respected and honoured.
