No living being should be getting 100% of their calories from ultra-processed foods.

Kibble’s best qualities are that it’s cost-effective and convenient.

Fresh, nutrient-dense whole foods have always been and will always be the key to longevity for all living things.

Take this knowledge and let it motivate you to boost your dog’s bowls, even if that’s just a small step in the minimally processed direction.

Do you believe food can be medicine? If yes, then you’re in the right place. Let’s talk. ❤️

🤮Why this "prescription diet" along with all dry kibble should be the last thing you feed your dog.

The first ingredient is a filler ingredient that is a carbohydrate. A by - product of the rice milling process.

Whole grain corn: another carbohydrate, one of the most common allergens for dogs, low nutritional value.

Chicken meal is a rendered product, meaning it's cooked at over 4️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ degrees Celsius to remove moisture, fat and any form of nutrition that may have initially been in it. This process will degrade many of the natural nutrients found in fresh chicken, particularly heat-sensitive vitamins and amino acids. Manufacturers might use this ambiguity to include lower-quality meat by-products.

Pea protein
Pea protein is a plant-based protein that doesn't provide the complete amino acid profile that animal proteins do. Dogs, being primarily carnivorous, thrive on animal proteins that offer a full range of essential amino acids necessary for their health. It is also generally less digestible for dogs.

The term "egg product" is quite vague and doesn't specify what part of the egg is being used or how it has been processed. Egg also refers to eggs that have been processed. It might just be the shell.

🤦‍♂️Corn gluten meal-more corn.
Corn gluten meal is often included in dog food as a cheap way to increase protein content of the food. Corn gluten meal is a by-product of corn processing and has a lower biological value compared to animal-based proteins. It is a potential allergen.

Including "chicken liver flavor" on the label is misleading. It gives the impression that the food contains nutritious chicken liver, but in reality, it may only contain a small amount or an artificial version of the flavor.

Ground Pecan Shells: A cheap way for them to increase the fiber in the diet. The fiber content is why a dog's diarrhea might improve with the diet, but the gut microbiome will be in worse shape afterward, causing the diarrhea to likely recur.

Synthetic vitamins and minerals : the trouble here is the potential of accidental overdosing ( in 2019 Hills pet food killed hundreds, if not thousands, of dogs by overdosing vitamin D in their diets).
Synthetic vitamins and minerals are also absorbed less efficiently than their natural counterparts.

I could go on but I think you get the gist...

There is NOT one ingredient in this diet that actually supports a dog's gut microbiome or gut health.

🤦‍♂️Yet millions upon millions of pet owners continue to trust their Veterinarian…

Proper nutrition is essential for your dog to thrive, promoting robust health and vitality for the long term.

Neglecting your dog’s nutritional needs can result in health complications and disease. Simply knowing whether an animal is a carnivore, herbivore, or omnivore isn’t sufficient.

To grasp the concept of raw dog food, it’s crucial to consider what dogs would naturally consume. Every aspect of their physiology, from their teeth to their tail, indicates a preference for meat.

Their digestive system is optimised for carnivorous diets, featuring a short, rapid intestinal tract and a stomach with high acidity and elasticity. Additionally, their gut bacteria are tailored for digesting meat and struggle with plant fibres.

THE DOGS IN RED DIED OF CANCER, THEN SOMETHING CHANGED...
I did a post 5 days ago about how eerily close the results of my initial poll of 1600 dog owners on Dogs First were to the results of a study published 6 or 7 years later which found that raw fed dogs are significantly less likely to see / use the vets than dry fed dogs. When you look at the two graphs, they are nearly twice as likely NOT to see the vet at all in a year and roughly twice as likely NOT to see the vet more than once.

My poll was anecdotal. The study is peer-reviewed evidence. The poll fuels the study. The study supports, in this case, corroborates (verifies, come on guys, can we keep it together), the poll.

Why is a question for another day though theories include we are better educated so we will can smaller maladies ourselves and there is the ever building lack of trust, sadly. But when studies show raw dog food reduces the #1, 2 and 3 reasons for visiting the vet today AND the CEO of a large dog charity (Brisbane Guide Dogs) reported an >80% savings in vet bills when she changed all of their dogs-in-training from Mars kibble to raw dog food, there is clearly another factor involved.

This graph is another one of those situations. It’s purely anecdotal. It’s simply the testimony (supported by vet records, which I haven't seen) of a standard poodle breeder with nothing to gain, no affiliation to any pet food company or business beyond that.

The dogs in red died of cancer.

The dogs in green died of something else.

Guess what that dotted line represents?

Correct, she changed to raw in 2013.

Purely anecdotal, of course, but she has 20 more very healthy dogs in her charge right now, all reared on raw, so we’ll know more in time.

I love this kind of stuff. I mean, if you were a betting man, you wouldn’t say raw dog food CAUSES cancer. That would seem a poor place to put your money.

Why does dry dog food cause cancer? Well, I’m just back from Turkey after lecturing to a large room of vets on exactly this. Excluding the lack of omega 3, unbalanced omega 6:3 ratio and horrible fats in general, the lack of antioxidants and the clear presence of highly carcinogenic moulds of and bevvy of truly toxic chemicals in general, the chief culprit, in my eyes at least, is carbs.

We KNOW tumours LOVE carbs (they acually love the insulin that results from feeding high-carb diets as insulin is a growth hormone. They’re covered in receptor for it. It’s how we find them in PET scans - we make people drink radioactive juice and watch the tumours light up like Christmas trees).

We KNOW (as in, studies show...) that high glycemic (diets with lots of rapidly digested carbs ready to go) fuel a large number of cancers in humans. Petrol to flames.

We KNOW the diet advice for said humans is drop carb consumption (to nil, ideally, moderate protein, higher-fat…shift the person to fat-burning, starving the tumour).

We KNOW dog tumours are virtually identical to humans, hence we test everything on them.

We KNOW medium carb dry food (32%) doubles the insulin release in dogs compared to low carb dry food (most dry food is >50%...).

We KNOW tumor growth is reduced when you feed dogs less carbs.

Interesting, eh?

I wonder, just thinking out loud, as long as it's permitted (have to check), but if I asked you all for your vet records reaching right back into the past, would you guys send them into me (after removing any and all personal data)? Your vet doesn’t own those records, you do. If you ask for them, they have to send them to you.

All I would need is the date you shifted to raw.

This graph has little power as it’s just 23 dogs. Imagine the info I could pull from 1000 dogs, 10,000 dogs. It wouldn't be an official, peer-review study, of course (which are falling in value these days, sadly), we're just taking a look because, as with my poll of vet visits years ago, simply asking the people what they are seeing / experiencing is eerily similar to what the studies verify is happening many years later.

It's called a "retrospective analysis". In Pharma it would be called a Stage 3 Clinical Trial - after Stage 1 (in the lab, seems OK), we move to Stage 2 (test on a small, controlled population). Stage 2 will detect any MAJOR issues that happen quickly but it can't detect more subtle side effects or anything chronic that happens over time. You need much bigger numbers for that and you need at least a few years. That is stage 3. You let loose the product on the masses. Then, after a few years, they look back and assess the impact by comparing the population with said change versus those that did not receive said therapy. It's how they unravelled smoking and lung cancer, for example. It's very powerful and hence we don't get them often, certainly about "that which cannot be discussed". Needless to say, the dry dog food sector has never done one (and, weirdly, the evidenced-based veterinary sector has never asked for it). All we have is the enormous surveys by Helsinki and New York that found very similar results - harm is happening on multiple fronts.

Researchers compared the health markers in client-owned dogs fed a raw diet to markers in dogs fed a high-quality extruded kibble.

To measure their health on the outside, they used a composite clinical health score, (CCS) of dental score + otitis score + integument (external health) score.

The raw-fed dogs scored significantly higher (as you might expect but now we have a study to prove it!).

To assess their health on the inside, they measured serum alkaline phosphatase activity, where an elevation is correlated with disease of the liver and bone, among others.

The raw-fed dogs scored significantly lower in the worrying markers than dry-fed dogs (while the dry-fed dogs were significantly higher they were still within accepted boundaries).

They also measured their globulins levels. These are antibodies. They are elevated in inflammatory conditions, infections, and some cancers. You don't want them raised.

In the dry-fed dogs, they were (again though, there were considered within accepted maximums).

In fact, in both cases, the p-value was less than 0.001 which means highly significant.

An almost complete whitewash.

Interestingly, the raw-fed dogs had more lymphocytes, raised when fighting infection, which was just about significant with a p-value of 0.05.

There were only 25 dogs in each group. The authors note more research is urgently needed to determine the impact of diet processing and nutrient content on canine health.

That was 3 years ago.

Wouldn't you think a veterinary department somewhere would have repeated this study using a lot more dogs by now?! Just in case they were recommending a product that was making the world's dogs ill?

Sadly, comparing the health of fresh and dry-fed dogs is not something the veterinary industry has any interest in doing.

Mad, eh?!

Let's recap the score for them:

3 studies showing raw meaty bones SAFELY clean teeth
2 studies show dry-fed dogs have more inflammatory markers
2 studies showing dry-fed dogs suffer more gut disease
1 study showing dry-fed dogs suffer more atopy (skin disease)
1 study showing dry-fed dogs have more histamine release in the skin layers.
1 study showing dry-fed dogs suffer more ear disease
1 study showing raw-fed dogs are healthier
1 study showing raw-fed dogs see the vets less

ZERO studies suggesting dry dog food is better for any health condition whatsoever.

Hard to get away from that last one.

Add to these awkward facts - KIBBLE poisons far more humans with Salmonella than raw dog food (the majority of them toddlers under two years of age) and the fact complete dry dog food has killed tens of thousands of dogs and cats over multiple instances in the last few decades alone (complete raw dog and cat food? Less than 10 pets) and you have to wonder...
..the veterinary industry recommends against feeding pets real food beecaaaause...

"More research is needed more research is needed"...
..says absolutely nobody with half a brain.

Forgive, but never forget.
