It’s with sadness that we’ve found out that our teacher in Japan, Zen master Shinzan died last week on 27th May.

We’re commemorating his life and expressing our gratitude through a 49-day online sesshin retreat starting yesterday 4th June. You’d be very welcome to join us to sit at any point. Get in touch for the zoom link.

Master Shinzan was a rare and fearless teacher. It’s an extraordinary thing to be touched by such a life. He was fiercely proud of his Zenways family and in that context more than once said to me, “I can die at peace now.”

As we sit together during this time our job is to continue to bring his incredible spirit into presence and manifestation. He is not gone. He can be with us more than ever. You can help this to happen.

We have a saying in Zen: "The lotus blooms in the middle of the fire."

Here you intend to be present, right in the middle of the disharmony to the point where you and the tension are no-longer two things. In this non-separation, something incredible happens. The tension begins to change, to move, to shift, sometimes it even gets stronger. But if we stay with it, it releases. And incredibly, as the physical release happens, it also liberates the emotions, the memory, whatever else had been locked into the suffering. You apply the same gentle awareness to these arisings and they too clear, and you become free.

Happy Winter Solstice everybody. Today marks the first day of astronomical winter and the shortest day of the year. It's one of our most ancient traditions, dating back over 10,000 years.

The winter solstice was celebrated in Britain long before the arrival of Christianity. The Druids would cut mistletoe that grew on oak trees and give it as a blessing. Oaks were seen as sacred and the winter fruit of the mistletoe was a symbol of life in the dark winter months.

How will you be celebrating?❄️

1. It helps you live in the present

Most of us spend the majority of our time thinking about the past or the future (regretting, worrying, planning). Or we are staring at screens at work, at home and on the move. Many of the benefits of zen yoga come from the ability to unplug and focus on what’s going on in your body and in your life right now.

2. It helps with stress relief

Yoga reduces perceived stress and anxiety, which in turn reduces the physical effects of stress on the body. By encouraging relaxation, yoga helps to lower the levels of the stress hormones such as cortisol. Related benefits include lowering blood pressure and heart rate, improving digestion and boosting the immune system.
