Setting young sporting dogs up for success โœจ ๐Ÿพ

Today I had the pleasure of meeting 15 month old golden sisters, Tuuli and Viza, ahead of starting their competitive agility and flyball journeys.

Their owners are already doing a fantastic job with foundation conditioning and taking the time to build up slowly - exactly what we love to see!

Early foundation work helps develop strength, balance and coordination, reducing injury risk and supporting long, healthy sporting careers ๐Ÿถ โœจ

After achieving my PGDip in Veterinary Physiotherapy last year, Iโ€™m now working towards my MSc at Hartpury University (because 6 years of studying just isn't enough)!

Iโ€™m running a research project exploring how equine physiotherapists assess rounding reflexes such as the sternal lift and caudal pelvic tilt. These are important and commonly used movements which physiotherapists stimulate to evaluate horses' spinal range of movement, coordination, core stability and neuromuscular control.

The aim is to develop a standardised, evidence-based grading scale to support more consistent and reliable physiotherapy assessment.

If youโ€™re an ACPAT or RAMP registered equine physiotherapist with at least two yearsโ€™ equine experience, Iโ€™d be really grateful for your input. Participation is fully remote and involves completing short online surveys, with the option to take part in later phases of the project.

Please see the poster below for more details. The survey link is in the comments, or feel free to message me directly if youโ€™d like more information.

Who should you trust to treat your animal? ๐Ÿค”

Physio, hydrotherapist, osteopath, chiropractor, masseuse, bodyworker, 'back lady'... ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ Choosing the right professional to treat your animal can feel like a minefield ๐Ÿคฏ

So what should you look for?

โœ… Recognised, regulated qualifications
โœ… Evidence-based clinical training
โœ… Accountability & professional standards
โœ… Vet collaboration & patient centred care

I'm proud to say that, as an ACPAT Chartered Physiotherapist, I bring 10+ years of training, evidenced based care and clinical reasoning with human patients and hold a postgraduate diploma in Veterinary Physiotherapy (soon to be MSc!). This means that I am fully trained, regulated and insured to treat your animals. If you're ever unsure about someone's qualifications... Just ask! A good practitioner will always be proud to answer ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿ‚ How can veterinary physiotherapy benefit your horse?

As the darker nights draw in and routines start to change, many horses get less turnout, reduced exercise and spend more time stabled. These seasonal shifts can lead to stiffness, muscle loss and a drop in fitness or performance.

Physiotherapy can help support your horse through the winter months by:
Relieving muscle tension and stiffness
Maintaining suppleness and strength through tailored exercise programmes
Identifying and addressing subtle lameness or muscle imbalances early
Supporting recovery after injury, time off or intensive competition seasons

A proactive physiotherapy plan can help your horse stay comfortable, supple and ready for spring ๐ŸŒฑ

๐Ÿพ Why do dogs benefit from Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy isn't just for humans - dogs experience many of the same physical challenges as we do. Whether it's recovering from an injury or surgery, managing chronic conditions or simply slowing down as they age, dogs can develop pain, stiffness and muscle imbalances that affect how they move and feel.

Unlike humans, dogs can't tell us where it hurts when they are injured or recovering from surgery. Most dogs (maybe with the exception of whippets!!) are pretty tough and will often 'get on with it' - this can lead to compensatory movement patterns and disuse, which can cause further strain or secondary injuries over time. Physiotherapy helps to address these subtle changes, addressing the cause rather than just the symptoms. Physiotherapy can also help with injury prevention in active dogs through conditioning exercises, advice on warm up and cool downs and graded training programmes.

For many dogs, physio can be the difference between 'getting on with it' and living a full and active life ๐Ÿถ
