Our brains love what they know, even if what they know hurts us.
They build motorways, automatic routes that we take without realising. For some of us, one of those motorways leads straight to drinking. The trigger could be anything, it’s Friday night, an argument or 9am. And before we know it, we’re already on that road again.
When we decide we want recovery, we start trying to build new roads. At first, they feel strange and uncomfortable. They take effort, patience, and a lot of falling down and getting back up. But over time, those new paths start to feel a little more natural, while the old drinking motorways slowly begin to grow quiet and overgrown.
They never fully disappear though. That’s why even after years, one drink can suddenly open it all back up, like we never left. We may know the way out, but is not always possible to make this trip again. Stay on the roads we’ve built in recovery. Choose the one that gives you peace.
You don't have to find recovery alone. Support is available, if you ask for it.
