Excited to let you all know that I am giving a talk about Nutritional Therapy on Saturday May 16th for Wellness Workshops. All the details are below and I look forward to meeting you.

📍Saturday May 16th ~ 10-11am
📖 via Studio website or for Early Bird Discount message direct before 30th April

✨What to expect?

This talk will outline the practical process and explain how your Nutrition therapist will try to identify the root of what is causing your health issues or symptoms. It will highlight a couple of landmark studies which show how, by working with nutrition and supplements, the risk factors for disease can be reduced or minimised. It will briefly cover some common health concerns such as digestive issues, hormones, menopause and fatigue and explain how this therapy approaches these areas.

We will take an example health issue and show step by step how this would be approached in therapy. We will address supplementation, why it’s needed and how to use it in a personalised and specific way, as well as the kind of tests we can run to help identify priority issues.

Finally dependent on time we will talk about how functional breathwork exercises can help improve client’s health including their vagus nerve function, and give clients tools to handle their stress.

🎁 Helen is kindly offering a consultation discount to attendees. No obligation to purchase.

Join us and find new ways to support your health & wellbeing.

As a nutritionist I am always on a mission to improve my client's breakfasts. Granola is not the best food for this, as baked and crispy food is linked to 'advance glycation end products', which are linked to ageing. However this will be a lot better than anything you can buy, there's no dried fruit or sugar plus it contains cinnamon which supports regulation of sugar in the blood. Enjoy 😀

After the recent 🧠 'brain health awareness' week and some extra 🏋 training I did with on nutritional therapy for cognition, I thought I would write some blogs around the subject.

I am often asked by friend with elderly parents suffering from dementia, "how do I not get it". Remember you need a well-functioning digestive system to absorb all the minerals and nutrients from your food.

Hope you find it useful - let me know 😀

How you breathe - fast, slow, shallow or deep - affects how your 💖 heart 💖 functions. It's multi-facted but:
🧪The chemistry of your breathing affects how blood vessels function
🫁The depth of your breathing affects tissue oxygenation
🧘 number of breath's you take affects your nervous system.

All of this affects your 💖 heart 💖 function in lots of way, especially your blood pressure.♥

This is by no means what I would call optimum for breakfast but there is always the ‘real’ versus ‘ideal’ question. I would not want folks to be eating this daily. But it is going to be better than shop bought granolas as the ingredients will be better quality and fresher, there’s no dried fruit and it will be quite high in protein and healthy fat. It’s useful as easy item to transport if you are on the road and will be better than grabbing stuff at the garage or service station. It’s also a useful emergency snack item if you load it up with natural yogurt, a few berries and perhaps some h**p seed and ground flax as well for more healthy fat and fibre.

However it is still baked which will drive the development of AGE (advance glycation end products) and it does contain sugar although as your tastebuds change I think this quantity could be ‘at least’ halved. So to summarise, a good back up option but take the sugar down and keep for occasional yumminess or to transition from sweet breakfast cereals on your way to a low GI solution.

It’s brain health awareness week so I thought I would mention a couple of take aways from a ‘cognition ’ course I did last year. The first one might surprise you.

• Sleep is very important but too much sleep is not beneficial as it spikes (raises) cortisol. 7.5 hours is optimum.
• The gut brain connection plays a huge role, think diet diversity and the microbiome.
• Genes play a role but the environment is key which includes, diet, exercise, stress levels, emotions and socialising/community etc.
• Metabolic conditions such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease all have an impact on brain function.

Depending on my clients’ issues and symptoms I tend to focus on the following

• Lowering inflammation
• Stabilising blood sugar and addressing any insulin resistance
• Correcting any dietary issues and making sure there is enough protein in the diet, at least 1g per kg of body weight
• Making sure there is healthy fat in the diet and optimising any omega 6:3 ratios (we will test this if there is enough budget)
• Correcting micronutrient deficiencies with a personalised and targeted supplement programme

If necessary we will look at hormone balance, toxicity levels, liver function, the microbiome balance and gut function as well as levels of fatty acids in the blood.

It all depends on what my client needs at this point in time.

The most common cause of heart attacks and strokes is atherosclerotic cardiovascular and/or cerebrovascular disease. We all know that nutrition and exercise is important but how you breathe has a direct impact on how the heart functions. This blog helps to explain.

Looking forward to this event on Thursday in Tunbridge wells with Pharma Nord. This is a full-day in-person seminar and helps to keep my knowledge up to date as well as counting towards my CPD.

Chronic stress and poor thyroid function both cause significant damage to human health, driving problems with energy, mood and sleep; and also insidiously setting us up for debilitating illnesses like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, immune and neurodegenerative problems.

The focus is on the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal-thyroid-immune axis how these inter-related life support systems work, how we fuel them, what can go wrong, and how we can use nutrition and lifestyle to restore balance and resilience.
