People ask me, often, what qualifications are needed to be a funeral celebrant. The answer is...there is no national, recognised, obligatory qualification - and some people train simply by shadowing other, more experienced celebrants, while others set out to get all kinds of 'qualifications' which, sadly, won't ensure they get work.

Funeral celebrancy demands the kind of qualities that you just don't learn in a classroom. While potential celebrants need to know about everything from how to write a eulogy, how to present a funeral service to the marketing of one's services etc - and much, much more - the main 'qualifications' for this work are empathy, discretion, life experience, humour...all the qualities that people have either got, or they haven't!

If you don't believe me, research 'what qualifications do I need to be a funeral celebrant?' It's surprising.

Funeral services are often very sad, of course they are. But sometimes, there is a service which is positively life affirming...it's nothing unusual for some services to include a sing song...popular songs that everyone joins in with. This really is a FANTASTIC occupation!

Confidence. It works both ways

Maybe you’ve been out of the jobs market for a while. Looking after family, looking after children, working part time, struggling with the consequences of the pandemic or maybe even toying with the idea of retirement. But for whatever reason, you’ve decided not only to come back, but to come back in style. You want to push yourself, find a new challenge, do something that gets the adrenaline moving. You want to earn a decent return for your efforts. But it can be difficult to get started, to make a decision about which was to go, what to do.

Let’s be frank. Take a course like this one, and it’ll cost you quite a bit of money and time. You need to be sure, you need to feel it in your heart that this is right for you. Being receptive to what you will learn can only come about if you are relaxed, and you’ll only relax once you feel confident in the career direction you’ve chosen to pursue.

There. We’ve said it. Confidence. But in truth, who is confident at the start of a new enterprise? No one. It may feel like the right thing to do, you may love every second of study and feel, like I did, that I’d found my niche... but until you’re out there and doing it, until you’ve finished your course, learnt all you can, well, it’ll still be a career in theory.

But make no mistake. If you make a success of funeral celebrancy, you’ll find all the confidence you need. And all the satisfaction. You’ll be making a career of helping people, supporting them, delivering a service that, if you do it right, they will never forget. You’ll give your clients confidence in knowing they can trust you. And if that doesn’t build your confidence, knowing that your work is worthwhile...well, don’t read on.

I’d been heading towards middle age. I was unprepared for retirement and yet, what to do next?Freelance work was becoming harder to find yet the idea of re-training, the prospect of starting again, was daunting. Who needs older workers when so many young people are looking for jobs?

Co-incidentally, I’d been to three funerals during that year that changed everything. I’d never heard of funeral celebrants and, while two of the services I attended were religious ceremonies the third was taken by someone called a ‘funeral celebrant’. I was intrigued. And, cockily, I thought that while the lady celebrant was good, I knew I could do better.

Nearly eight years down the line, I have done better. I’ve built a wonderful business as a celebrant and in recent years, people have been asking me how. The idea of teaching others has been knocking around in my brain for years and now it’s happening. I took a wonderful course in funeral celebrancy all those years ago, but I have learnt so much since and, with a good team of people around me to make this dream a reality, I’m about to share all of it.

People skills? Who has them?

A lot of occupations these days seem to demand so called ‘people skills’. All too often, as a consumer, it’s struck me that natural, instinctive people skills are often squeezed into a one-size-fits-all format, and that few workers get to use their initiative or whatever people skills they might have. While there may be good marketing strategies behind hearing the same corporate speak trotted out over the phone, the same phrases used by workers in shops, it can be so frustrating to know that few people have the authority to deal with your problem, help with your query or understand your point of view using their own initiative, their own empathy, their own real and genuine people skills.

You know the feeling. You need help, you need answers, and all too often you feel you hit a brick wall of carefully constructed indifference.

It’s not like that when you become a funeral celebrant. The people you talk to, work with, aim to help, will often be completely frank, sometimes indiscreet, almost always distressed and they may share with you their deepest, darkest family secrets. You will never, ever speak about what you hear to anyone else. This is rule number one. And yet, this is the time, and this is the occupation in which your genuine people skills will come to the fore. You can help others in their darkest hour by genuinely caring, by listening, by being willing to help. Do your job well and you will never be forgotten.
