Sussex Sleep Services is delighted to be teaming up with Susanna Fall, who is a Nutritionist and Pharmacist from London. Susanna has expertise in managing patients who wish to sustain weight loss and alter their lifestyle and relationship with food.
Teaming up with Susanna will give us a more holistic approach to our patient management and also in screening overweight patients for sleep disordered breathing where necessary. 😊

Sussex Sleep Services continues to get outstanding 5-star Google reviews! We have now reached double figures.
Our patients are delighted with the minimal waiting times for first consultations, speedy investigations and the opportunity to participate in their own treatment choice after detailed discussion of results - all at a very reasonable price.
After a year, current data shows 72% overall compliance in our CPAP patients with only one deciding not to continue on CPAP. 64% have achieved 85+% compliance and report a much improved quality of life. This compares with average published compliance and adherence to CPAP which is between 30 and 60% [J Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg. 2016; 45: 43.7, 8].
Personal attention obviously counts for a lot!

Continuous collection of outcome data will enable us to publish very robust statistics in the future.
Insomnia patients are also reporting much improved quality of life with a number of interventions at our disposal (data to come).

We have recently had several patients previously seen in the NHS and advised that no treatment was necessary for sleep disordered breathing.
An overnight WatchPAT study confirmed normal oxygen saturations, but a high heart rate variability and PAT alterations suggested poor sleep and in view of their raised Epworth Scores I diagnosed Upper Airways Resistance Syndrome and referred them for CPAP. None of them were suitable for mandibular splints which would be my preferred treatment in thiose cases.

We delighted that CPAP has worked well for them and that they are all completely satisfied and compliant with treatment, and wish to continue using their devices.
This shows that simply following guidelines does not work for every patient. Clinical judgement prescribing individual treatment is what really matters.

It is always satisfying to treat patients to their complete satisfaction, and we look forward to receiving more as we go along!

I am pleased to say that I have just booked my trip to Athens for European Sleep Research Society Sleep 22 Congress in September.
It will be great to get back to face-to-face education in lecture theatres rather than sitting isolated at home watching people talking on Zoom and Teams!
I can't wait to catch up with old friends again and see what they have been up to over the last two years.

I have seen an interesting patient with insomnia and a typical Epworth score of 3, but STOPBang 4/8. She has difficulty initiating sleep but also difficulty returning to sleep when she wakes startled in the night. She is 85 and overweight. Using the two questionairres together enables a focused history and as so often, two different diagnoses are probably contributing to her symptoms. Many patients have more than one diagnosis in sleep and everything needs to be addressed for success!
