These two lovely, lively people come to one of my Friday Pilates classes. Not only are they COMPLETELY different sizes (yes, the photo does look a bit AI-ed but I promise it isn't) they each have a different set of strengths and weaknesses.
For Mr Bendy we are working on control and for Mrs Neck we are working on torso flexibility. Same exercises but different intentions and modifications. Small group classes allow that attention to detail but still with the energy and curiosity that comes from working together. The progress is impressive.
We are also working on trying not to get too distracted by the giggles.
I love teaching Pilates and am forever slightly on awe of what it can achieve.

Even when it's wet, windy and muddy the team still like a walk. It's a moment of reset for me and, of course, some exercise. For my team-mates it's all about things to chase and, more recently, will they ever find another sausage roll like last week?😁

It might sound odd but I am completely loving working with these bad boys. It's taken me a while to get to these weights but I am now feeling a tiny bit invincible (aging and injuries aside!)
A little 20 minute workout at home that I can squeeze into life - without a trip to the gym; a fancy wardrobe of Sweaty Betty gear; or a monthly Direct Debit from my bank account- suits me just right. Achievable, reproducible and beneficial.
Helping to support:
- Bone density;
- Fight muscle loss;
- Build functional muscle tissue;
- Joint health;
- Cardiac health;
- Brain health;
- Reduced inflammation;
- Boost mood;
- Healthy ageing....and...and....AND

!HOW AMAZING IS EXERCISE?!

Just do whatever you can and keep at it. For now and for the future.

Had a great afternoon in London looking at all kinds of bodies for GCSE art preparation with my eldest.
I could look at bones forever, I think. They are endlessly fascinating and tell us so much and the same applies in clinic - what forces has each bone been put under; is there symmetry; is there scarring; what are the ends/articulations/joints like etc etc?
If you like this sort of thing the small-yet-perfectly-formed Grant Museum (part of UCL) is the place to go.

I was at The Hawthorns Eastbourne this morning to help promote wellbeing connections in Eastbourne. I met some familiar faces; lovely patients; new business owners and old friends including the Sussex Footcare team and had a natter with Andrew about his new technology and orthotics service - very high spec.

I also met Bryce from the Eastbourne Healthcare Network and I will look forward to joining their next meeting.

And the sun is shining. What a nice morning!

Who am I to judge how you get your exercise? Wade about in a filthy ditch if you must but I won't be joining you! Check out those legs on my Mutley!😳

Maybe it's zumba, tennis or walking; gym sessions, aquaerobics or Swoove - chose what you love and do it as often as possible. You need to put the time in to look after yourself because no one else can.

If you need some help getting back to those active things you love and miss maybe I can help. I won't shove the exercise regime at you (unless you want that) but we can find sensible ways to get you back at it.

AND....there are the added benefits to mental, bone, heart, hormonal and brain health (to name just a few) that you get from moving. So, let's do it - but in a sensible way with support! It's a win win situation.

What are your health goals today? And what are the longer term ones?

Today exercise motivation was pretty non-existent - I'd been utterly soaked in the rain 4 times; had a stream of tedious admin jobs and I achieved next to nothing.
The only way I could face exercise was to make it brief. So it called for a warm-up and then a nourish move love 15 minute full body work out. As the warm-up had perked me up a little I was able to use slightly heavier weights - knowing it would all be over soon. And it was.
Then I had a lovely stretch concentrating on STIFF hips (which I wouldn't have done had I plonked on the sofa).
Finally, dinner - which could have been a toast fest - was a colourful plate of veg with houmous straight from the pot.
My mood is more lifted, focus more focused and my body benefitted by some exercise and good food.
I'm now going have that bit of chocolate my husband bought me.
Sometimes you gotta keep it easy and give yourself a pat on the back for job only half done. Better half done that not done at all.

So, exercise is all about weight loss, your heart and your muscles?

Wrong!

It's good for your brain too.

I've been reading a book by Nicole Vignola, who studied Neuroscience at Bristol University. We think exercise is all about cardio-vascular health, strong muscles; shedding a few pounds but there are other great reasons to exercise.

1. The increased blood flow around the whole body helps oxygenate and nourish the brain and is neurons;
2. Exercise helps release feel-good hormones such as dopamine and serotonin - helping reduce depression;
3. It stimulates the body's own pain killers (endorphins are released);
4. It helps us deal better with stressful situations;
5. It helps reduced inflammation in the body;
6. It enhances co-ordination, balance and agility to stave off physical effects of neurodegenerative diseases (stiffness, shakes etc);
7. It boosts grey-matter volume in the brain and helps with memory;
8. Mitochondria (the power houses in all cells) increase in numbers helping with energy, mood and neurotransmitter regulation;
9. It distracts us from stress as we have to concentrate and focus - 'reboots' our thoughts.

So, get up, shame it out and get moving to help your brain - you'll feel so much better for it.

This is one of my favourite rehab exercises to engage the core muscles and help with low back pain. This is such a great exercise as it is generally fine for most people to do and it is surprisingly hard - the lower the knees are the harder it seems to be. There are plenty of modifications possible too so it can progress as you do.
