“They’ll grow out of it…”
Maybe.
But what if they don’t?
Neophobia is normal — but when it meets anxiety or sensory differences, fussy eating can stick around longer than expected.

Struggling to get your child to eat mixed foods like curry, casseroles or lasagne?
This is often because the combination of different textures and flavours in mixed foods can be overwhelming, unfamiliar and even a little bit scary. They can't see exactly what it contains making them hesitant to try the meal.
Here are some things you can do to encourage your child to eat mixed foods:
🍅 Start by introducing them to the individual ingredients separately. For example, serve plain rice and in a separate pot the curry sauce, then some cubed chicken on the side.
This is important so they know exactly whats in a curry to familiarise themselves with what each bit looks like, smells like, feels like and (if they're confident enough) tastes like. Divided plates work well for this.
🥣 Encourage your child to help you prepare the meal. Everything from shopping for ingredients to helping in the kitchen. Even little ones can rinse the rice or sprinkle the spices. It's not an immediate fix but this involvement will increase their interest and curiosity about food .
🧀Give your child some control by letting them serve themselves. You could also ask them if they want to be the 'master server' and serve you too!
P.S. Children with sensory differences may struggle with the sensory aspects of mixed meals, such as the colours, smells, textures, and tastes...

“If you eat your veg, you can have pudding.”
Sound familiar?
It seems helpful -but actually teaches kids that veg is the chore and dessert is the prize. That mindset fuels picky eating.
Instead, offer pudding either way. No pressure, no strings attached. It builds trust and calms mealtimes.

Sticker charts. Hiding veg. “Just one bite for Daddy.”
If those haven't worked - it’s because they don’t solve the real problem.
Most fussy eating is driven by fear, not defiance.
And when we remove that fear and rebuild confidence, everything changes.

Asking your children to eat “just one bite” nearly always backfires.
It raises their anxiety levels and reduces their willingness to try.
A trust-first setup works better, here's how:
Serve meals family-style were the food is placed in the middle of the table so your child can choose what and how much to put on their plate, and keep at least one of their 'safe foods' available.
Parents using this approach tell me they have calmer mealtimes and little wins like “she licked a pea” or “he asked for raspberries” and these come more and more often as their child's confidence grows.

Worried you’re not doing enough to ensure your child is eating well?
You’re definitely not the only parent to feel this way.
A lot of parents feel unsure about what to feed their children every day for a balanced nutritious diet, especially when they are dealing with a fussy eater.
Here’s a rough guide of what your child should be consuming every day to ensure the best possible foundation for a healthy future:
🥖 5 portions of starchy carbs
🧀 3 portions of dairy
🍗 2 portions of protein rich foods
🍉 5 portions of fruit and veg

Are you back to school next week?
Did you know that what your child has for breakfast can affect their performance at school 📖🤓🧠
The connection between nutrition and learning is HUGE because a child’s ability to focus, learn, and succeed in school is directly tied to their diet.
🍳 A sweetened breakfast cereal might give a quick energy boost, but will likely be followed by a crash that leaves them lethargic and inattentive.
Instead choose:
🥣 Porridge with fruit and a nut butter,
🥚 Scrambled eggs with toast and tomatoes,
🥤A smoothie packed with fruit (or veg) and protein such Greek yoghurt,
🫘 Baked beans on wholemeal buttered toast,
🍓 Overnight oats with berries
🍳 Cheese omelette with pepper, mushrooms and onions
These keep energy levels stable throughout the morning and brains ticking over beautifully.
Give this some love if it was helpful (and don’t forget to save!)

The best way to get children to accept a new food is to match it's sensory properties.
If they have a preference for white food = make the new food you introduce a white food.
If they have a preference for crunchy food = make the new food a crunchy food.
If they have a preference for bland flavours = make sure the new food is bland flavoured.
If they have a preference for cold food = make the new food a cold food.

Why “popping it in the fridge and trying again later” isn’t the solution to your child’s fussy eating…
(And what to do instead!) 👇👇
If you’ve got a fussy eater on your hands, you’ve probably tried every trick in the book by now, including this one.
But research shows that this is actually considered a negative feeding practice and can cause more harm than good!
How so? 🤷♀️
Because your child perceives this as punishment for not eating, and thinks they must comply with their parents rules at the dinner table...
Which is NOT how we want our kids to feel at the dinner table!
In the long run, this could damage your child’s relationship with food.
So here’s what to do instead… ⤵️
1️⃣ Serve meals "family style" so your child can help themselves to what they want and leave what they don’t want. Put different component parts of the meal in the centre of the table.
2️⃣ Allow your children to eat in response to their hunger. They should decide if they want to eat it, and when they’re finished.

Children's Nutrition is my nutrition business, I’m Sarah Almond Bushell, a Registered Dietitian and Children’s Nutritionist and specialist in the diets of babies, young children and teens. I am an expert in weaning babies and nourishing toddlers and as a result am an independent consultant to Annabel Karmel, working with her to ensure babies and toddlers get the best start in life.
I’ve always been interested in being healthy. As a child I loved food, from growing vegetables in my granddads allotment to supermarket shopping with my mum. As a teenager I made celebration cakes and party food and when I started babysitting my creations became fun, child friendly foods made with healthy ingredients that the kids loved to eat.
Fast-forward 30 years and almost 20 years working in health & nutrition and the passion is still there.
Having my own two beautiful children allowed me plenty of opportunities to put theory into practice and as a result I’ve become an expert. Because of this I advise many baby and toddler food brands as well as supporting new Mums and Dads through their baby's weaning journey. I’ve helped hundreds of families over the years and I can help you grow your own superhero!
I offer group weaning workshops and can come to your local baby group or simply in the comfort of your own home. Also I host individual consultations helping families optimise nutrition for health as well as assisting those in changing their diet to manage medical conditions. Consultations take place either virtually online or in my Sussex clinic. I also offer personalised nutrition packages involving a home visit, personal shopper experience and video-conference follow up.
Previous clients have included the children of celebrities as well as several nursery schools and food companies including Plum Baby, Rachel's Organic and Zebedee's Lunch Box.
