One of our fantastic students, Cathy O’Farrel, created these lovely little charts as part of her project. She kindly agreed to share her remedy suggestions to support others who are learning.

They are simple, practical, and made with care, exactly what helps when you are building confidence with acute prescribing.

If you would like to learn how to choose remedies for common acute ailments and feel more confident using homeopathy at home, our One Day Workshop is taking place this Saturday. You are very welcome to join us and learn in a supportive and friendly space.

A four-month double-blind, randomised trial involving sixty patients with chronic low-back pain found that individualised homeopathic medicines led to greater improvements than placebo across all major pain and disability measures, including the Oswestry and Roland-Morris questionnaires and the McGill Pain Questionnaire.

Frequently prescribed remedies included Rhus toxicodendron, Bryonia alba, Hypericum perforatum, and Nux vomica. Only minor adverse events were noted, suggesting homeopathy may offer a beneficial complementary option for chronic low-back pain, though further independent studies are needed.

When change feels overwhelming rather than motivating...

For some, stepping out of the comfort zone stimulates growth.
For others, it can quickly lead to overload, fatigue, and withdrawal.

Calcarea carbonica is a classic example of this latter pattern.
From a homeopathic perspective, Calcarea carbonica reflects a state in which the organism seeks stability, predictability, and structure in order to function well.
Change itself is not necessarily feared. However, rapid change, increased expectations, or sustained pressure can feel deeply destabilising.

Individuals needing Calcarea carbonica often cope best when life follows familiar rhythms and routines. When these are disrupted by new habits, increased responsibilities, or heightened demands for performance, the response may be a slowing down, increased irritability, or a sense of being unable to keep up.

What may externally be interpreted as resistance or lack of motivation is, from a homeopathic viewpoint, an adaptive response. The organism prioritises preservation over rapid progression, seeking to maintain balance rather than expend resources it does not feel it has.

Stress in this state may manifest as mental fatigue, increased worry, reduced resilience, and disturbances of rest and recovery. The more pressure there is to “push through,” the stronger the need for safety and consolidation becomes.

Calcarea carbonica reminds us that sustainable change cannot be imposed on a system that feels insecure.
This remedy illustrates a central homeopathic principle: responses to stress and change are individual, and closely linked to each person’s adaptive capacity.

In the coming posts, we will continue to explore different homeopathic remedies, each reflecting a distinct way of responding to pressure and the challenge of stepping beyond the comfort zone.

Rhus tox 30c – aches, pains and stiffness with restlessness. Can’t get comfortable. Fever, sweaty in bed, chilly when uncovered, very thirsty for cold drinks.
Bryonia 30c – headache and pains worse from any movement. Must lie still. Dry cough, dry mouth and nose, intense thirst for large quantities of cold drinks.
Eupatorium perfoliatum 30c – severe muscle and bone aches, back pain, headache, sore eyeballs, aversion to light. Thirsty for cold drinks.

There seems to be a theme right now, flu, coughs, colds and FEAR. I find life easier when I am empowered, but when I feel disempowered or listen to fearful media.

Here is some information on fevers and Paracetamol...and NOTE: this is not an anti-paracetamol post... 🤓

Your baby/child is hot, upset and grizzly and not eating. You go into that ‘do something’ mode. You reach for Paracetamol (aka Calpol, Tylenol)

Paracetamol is often described as a medications that ‘treats’ a fever.

A fever is the body’s healing response. 💥

Heat (fever) helps slow down viruses and helps immune cells work faster. 🔥

It’s an INTENTIONAL HEALING response.

Paracetamol doesn’t remove the virus. It suppresses the fever via. the brain, lowering your child’s temperature set-point.
So the temperature comes down.

The immune system is doing it’s best to deal with the virus...in the meantime, the Paracetamol must be detoxified by the liver.

This is normal biology, as the body can’t have a ‘toxin’ hanging around, whatever the medication.

One of the liver’s key ingredients for detoxifying Paracetamol is glutathione.

Glutathione is one of the body’s most important antioxidants.

It helps protect cells from oxidative stress and supports immune balance.

When glutathione is being used up, there are ‘trade-offs’. A young child’s glutathione levels are on the lower side already, as the body is still developing, including the detox system.

There is temporarily less glutathione available for other jobs, such as managing inflammation and supporting recovery, whilst ‘mopping’ up the Paracetamol.

Meanwhile, if the immune process has not managed to deal with the virus sufficiently, the body may raise a fever again, or the fever just lingers, or comes and goes....
..because the body is still doing its work, it is dealing with the ‘threat’ aka the virus.

Understanding what the body is doing is empowering. It provides a sense of ease.

Why not allow your child’s fever to run its course, providing your child with plenty of cuddles, skin-to-skin contact, fluids, sleep/rest, soothing stories, soothing tone?

And see how she/he goes.

If you use Paracetamol, so be it, no judgment. Making informed choices does not mean it has to be black and white; it is about understanding your choices.

Tomorrow in part 2...

Have you considered other options...to support your child’s fever in response to a pathogen?

Prescribed a medication to REDUCE/LOWER the production of stomach acid? YET....

The issue is commonly, not too much stomach acid, but not strong enough acidity and therefore ends up in the wrong post code.

Also reducing stomach acid, reduces the disinfecting powers of the stomach, after all we need those microscopic bugs to be 'singed' by the STRONG acid. If not, they can go onto reap havoc further down the gut...which can result in chronic health issues such as bowel cancer.

IF THIS IS THE CASE, THEN WHY DOES NOT EVERYONE WHO IS ON THESE ANTACIDS KNOW THIS? 🧠

So what happens next? You don't have enough stomach acid, so the LOWER OESOPHAGEAL SPHINCTER does not get the CLEAR acidic message that you can now 'shut shop', so it remains open, and out shoots the acid (and pepsin) from the stomach. OUCH OUCH! 🤨

The stomach has a thick mucosal lining, which protects it from the acidity (isn't biology just amazing?) and from the pepsinogen (which is a protein-digesting enzyme)...but sadly the oesophagus lining does not have this protection, so there is pain, burning, inflammation and if this continues, ulcers etc. ⚠️

Furthermore, the stomach acid reduces even further...yet acid reflux in MAJORITY of cases is not due to, excess acidity.

So, as the acid-blocking medications are continued, they increase the risk of H.Pylori. These critters are around all the time, but they only come out to party when the 'big bro' has left (i.e stomach acid is low). Sadly, H.Pylori can lead to stomach cancer if left unchecked. 👀

(there is a blog on H.Pylori too)

But on a more nutritional note, once you reduce stomach acid with these meds, you impact everything else downstream, including nutrient depletion.

I see too many kids on Omeprazole, kids should not be prescribed Omeprazole IMHO, then they end up having growth issues, nutritional deficiencies, poor gut health....on and on it goes.

Also acid reflux can be linked to poor bile health, constipation, poor gut motility, overeating (you know when you feel so full, you can't even breathe), not enough serotonin, not leaving enough time in between meals as this upsets the Migrating Motor Complex...and so on

Know anyone with acid reflux? And know any parents whose child is on Omeprazole? This blog is for them...🙏

Some tips, some free education, some love 💚
