If medicine overlooks the power of a healthy terrain over fighting disease, Houston… we have got a problem.
This post if not anti-va**ine neither is it pro...take it as you see it. So 'hater's will be blocked. I am utterly saddened to see the rise in chronically sick children. I qualified 25 years ago, and I did not see children with so many illnesses, from auto-immune conditions such as Celiac's through to poor teeth health, to severe allergies.
Myself and my husband have raised two boys, who are now adults and we have had the privilege of raising them as toxin-free as possible.
Our path might look different from yours. But so far, our kids have weathered just many acutes and accidents, chickenpox, bronchiolitis, ear infections, fevers, broken bones, grazes, fingers slammed in doors, chest infections, urinary tract infections, appendicitis, tonsillitis, and plenty more bumps along the way. Every one of those acute situations was treated naturopathically with the help of a general anaesthetic each! Thank GOD for pharmaceutical drugs. Some assume we were just privileged to afford this ...nope. Their health was simply our top priority.
They have been raised on healthy food, they have not had any jabs, be it mist or injections. This is a choice we made together having done all our research. Both have allergies to nuts, both have had plenty of acute infections. The immune system is ALIVE, it is constantly surveying, it is on YOUR side, it does not go wrong all by itself.
Some people, say well they are obviously not healthy, if they have had all these infections. Imagine raising a child that does not have ANY INFECTIONS? That to me is a sign of immune suppression.
Imagine, we are exposed to toxins on the daily, 24-7, why would a healthy child not 'do acute infections?'
This is either 'magical' thinking or delusional thinking. The immune system is learning, is it growing and developing as your child is learning and growing and developing, therefore it will throw out some infections. It is doing it's job.
Some parents blame the nursery, others blame starting School, some blame School lunches ...but what about the breakfast at home before School? What does their breakfast consist of? Did you know most kids start School with an insulin surge? Did you know most kids eat 'ultra-processed food'.
The honest truth? If as parents we eat 'crap', do not expect your child to eat healthy food. They do what they see, not what they are told.
Start with food, give your child a solid blood sugar balanced breakfast, and don't blame the School lunches, if breakfast at home is loaded with sugar and colourings. Don't blame School lunches if your kid's after-school snack is Doritos, or fruit shoots or flavoured milk drinks.
Straight up...see it as a privilege to be the 'out-liers': the ones feeding our kids real food, giving them real play outdoors, and raising them without screens.
It takes time, energy and going against the tide. It takes building community...when did your child last play on the streets with the neighbours kids? This makes me smile (and sad as my boys are now all grown up) and reminds me, when we built the world's biggest skate board, and the boys were riding it down the street with the neighbour's kids and out came the 'grumpy man', who started to yell at them, to stop making so much noise, but the neighbour's kids grandad was having none of it...and the 'grumpy man' apologised. This 'grumpy man' now chats with my older one, both are gym buddies.
Childhood illnesses are not a death sentence, but you do want to be prepared and you do want your child's gut health resilient, populated with 'good bacteria'.
When/if your child gets an acute infection, they should be able to bounce back from it AS LONG AS THEY HAVE THE INGREDIENTS...minerals, healthy carbohydrates, protein, fats, love, playing out doors with the local kids, not on computer screens, sleep, laughter, stories etc.
Remember to raise healthy children nowadays, you have to be the 'outlier'. Healthy children are not a given anymore.
This post is not a judgment on anyone, just a post to encourage parents to invest in their children's health.
And why on earth do we need the MMRV? How many more are going to be added to the list?
If you read this far....here is more on the immune system. Grab a cuppa.
