How often do you look at your baby with their perfect little toes, their shining eyes, their adorable squeals, their squishy rolls and think how totally exquisite they are.

We are all born worthy and perfect beings.

But somewhere along the way, you stopped seeing yourself in a positive light, now quick to criticise any minor mistake or imperfection as though they are who you are.

When you look in the mirror, do you see your bright eyes, your beautiful laugh lines, your body so strong and capable of growing life? Or do you only see your flaws?

We may feel like our lives leave us scarred and broken and ruined as we navigate pain, mistakes, accidents, trauma - and that therefore we’re somehow not good enough.

But what would happen if you started to look at yourself as human, just like your perfect baby, in all their humanness and see that we all entered the world that way.

Maybe there are more imperfections now, but they can still be beautiful. You are still so very loveable.

It’s birth trauma awareness week - 14th-19th July 2025.

If I asked you how the birth went, what would you say?

Every birth experience is unique to mother and baby and up to 45% of births are traumatic with 4-5% of women diagnosed with PTSD after experiencing birth trauma.

There are so many factors which may leave you feeling traumatised by your labour but you don’t have to tear, haemorrhage, have an emergency c-section, have your baby taken to the NICU, or have surgery for you birth to be traumatic.

Feeling distressed, unsafe, out of control, and frightened at any point during your labour can leave you with anxiety, intrusive thoughts, flashbacks and depression.

You don’t have to pretend it was ok because you and your baby got through it in the end. Holding in your experience and minimising its effects won’t help you feel better in the long run.

So tell me, how was the birth really?

Hard truths can be hard to hear and hard to say but can change the course of your life.

You have to find a way to take care of yourself. And I don’t necessarily mean a bubble bath (though by all means, that too). We all have basic needs - some universal and some unique to you, that must be met for you to have quality of life.

This is particularly hard for anxious mums, but it is reality that we cannot control everything. Good and bad things happen on our watch and when the baby is with their other parent, grandparent, nursery etc. We cannot control the world, the weather, accidents. Trying to control everything makes sense when you’re scared and overwhelmed but it’s is a futile pursuit.

I so often hear from mums that they feel as though they’re wasting these precious early months and years with their children by feeling low and overwhelmed. They may say in the same breath that they wish more people offered to help. If you take one thing away from this, it’s ask 👏 for 👏 help 👏. In whatever form, from someone making you a cup of tea to weekly therapy - it well makes your life and experience of being a mum better.

If you’re in the absolute thick of it right now, don’t let your mind convince you it will last forever.

Whether you’re fighting through postnatal depression or anxiety, feeling like you can’t cope, or barely getting through each day - I am certain there are better days to come.

You have endured everything you’ve come up against so far, you are so much stronger than you know.

Getting better doesn’t look like waking up one morning and everything being fixed or feeling easy. It looks like small, incremental changes. It takes time and support. And it will get better.

You still matter. Even when you’re knee-deep in meeting your baby’s needs, your needs continue to matter. When we stop paying attention to our own needs, our body and mind will begin to scream and we start to suffer.

Don’t forget to feed yourself when you feed baby; bathe yourself with tenderness like you do your baby; breathe in fresh air to boost your health, just like you do for your baby. Caring for yourself even in the stolen moments of time that are often all you get as a mum, will help you feel stronger and better able to keep caring for your child.

Mums, don’t forget you are cherished too.

If you are feeling low, anxious, and overwhelmed in motherhood, therapy can help to improve your mood, increase feelings of calm and balance.

If motherhood isn’t feeling as joyful as you hoped and you find yourself stuck in the drudgery, try these little tips to boost your joy.

1. Have daily dance parties! Stick on one of your favourite upbeat songs and have a boogie with your little one. The movement will release endorphins which boost your mood.

2. Never cut a cuddle short. Lean into and breathe in your child when they hug you and only let go when they do. This releases lovely oxytocin in the brain.

3. Pull funny faces and practise silly laughs with your kid. By the end you’ll both be in hysterics. Laughing is good for the soul!

4. Walk in nature: the woods, the fields, the beach - anywhere as close to nature as you can. Breathe in the fresh air, soak up the vitamin D, and get moving to feel the freedom of space around you.

5. Do something you love. It’s so common to have to deprioritise all the things you love to make way for your baby but you need to carve out even just a little time to read / watch a tv show / go to your favourite coffee shop / draw / play an instrument - do something you love, even for just 5 minutes.
