The holidays can bring up a lot for us.
• Family dynamics

Going into the new year, instead of ‘new year, new me’ or short lived resolutions, I wonder what you might choose to add into your life if you looked in the mirror and saw your best friend or your child - what would you want for them this year?

Sometimes, all of a sudden, we find ourselves at a tipping point. A place of overwhelm when everything is spilling over and you have no resources left to cope with the day, let alone anything bigger you might be facing.

Begin an intentional practice of checking in with yourself, asking ‘how am I feeling today?’, ‘how full is my stress bucket’. When you do this you will start to identify the warning signs and the triggers that tell you you’re reaching your limit.

With greater awareness comes the ability to choose to implement things to fill your cup and empty your bucket, whether it’s time with friends, journalling, meditation, etc. Whatever helps you destress, do it even in the calm moments to build your resilience over time.

I’m often struck by how much we keep to ourselves, how much we hold in, repress. We’re afraid of being ‘too much’. We don’t want to burden anyone or feel like we’re whinging. We don’t have the tools we need to let it out safely. We don’t know where to go to release everything pent up inside us.

In therapy with me, of course we can talk, but you can also nap, you can scream, you can cry, you can shout, you can lie on the floor, you can be silent, you can draw. However you want to get it out, whatever you need, it’s ok with me.

Becoming a mum has added so much to the amazing, multi-faceted person you are.

It has not replaced who you used to be, but sometimes amongst the talk of sleep, milk, weaning, regressions, nappies, schedules etc etc, we don’t make time to talk about anything else.

Like your love of gigs; that summer you travelled round Europe; your thoughts on the meaning of life; how much you love to read…

She’s not gone, she’s in the background waiting for you to grab her hand and pull her back into your life. And guess what, your kids are going to love her too.

How often do you look at your baby with their perfect little toes, their shining eyes, their adorable squeals, their squishy rolls and think how totally exquisite they are.

We are all born worthy and perfect beings.

But somewhere along the way, you stopped seeing yourself in a positive light, now quick to criticise any minor mistake or imperfection as though they are who you are.

When you look in the mirror, do you see your bright eyes, your beautiful laugh lines, your body so strong and capable of growing life? Or do you only see your flaws?

We may feel like our lives leave us scarred and broken and ruined as we navigate pain, mistakes, accidents, trauma - and that therefore we’re somehow not good enough.

But what would happen if you started to look at yourself as human, just like your perfect baby, in all their humanness and see that we all entered the world that way.

Maybe there are more imperfections now, but they can still be beautiful. You are still so very loveable.
