Language development begins before birth and continues to be a major part of the child’s development for the first three years of life. We can aid the child’s language learning in everything we do- from narrating what we are doing when they are babies, to introducing new vocabulary through the child’s interests.

At home, observe what your child is drawn to and you can help give them the language for that interest. If the interest holds, continue to talk about specific parts as well. For example, a child might have an interest in transport vehicles, then trains, then the parts of the train!

Simple activities that have children repeating and repeating. At home this child was ripping books. After some observation, it was clear he was ripping the books for the practice of ripping paper. We were able to redirect to this activity, ripping newspaper, and he was in deep concentration. Not to mention the great fine motor skills that come from this!

We offer a variety of practical life activities to the child in the classroom. Some of these activities involve care of the environment. Adult tasks appeal to the child and we are able to recreate these activities so that the child can do them independently.

Watering the plants may seem simple, but has quite a few steps involved. Collecting water, choosing a plant to water, carefully carrying the plant across the room, watering, wiping up any spills, sweeping up any dirt, and returning the plant! Once the child has been shown how to do this work, the control for error is clear so the child is able to recognize and correct the error without adult assistance. Perhaps the child forgot to fill the jug with water for the second plant. Here the child will notice the empty jug when they go to pour, where they will naturally go and correct the error by collecting more water themselves.

These types of practical life activities allow children to concentrate, develop their sense of order, practice independence, work on gross and fine motor skills, and feel a sense of pride by contributing to their environment!

Concentration can be simple ❤️ The octohedron mobile is a great introduction for babies’ developing sight, moving away from black and white to our three bold primary colours. The glossy finish catches the light and the gentle sway from the natural air movements is enough for baby to lock in and track their movement. Various heights give baby the challenge of refocusing between objects.

At times it can feel as though we’re not entertaining our children enough. Learning to sit back and observe the beautiful work they are doing is a great benefit for both adult and baby!

We loved seeing various moments of uninterrupted concentration this week from all the children who came to visit. Thanks for a fab week!
