Homeopathy for Sciatica - Nine Remedies
Sciatica is a type of nerve pain which occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes irritated or compressed. The sciatic nerve is a major nerve in the human body. It is a branch of the sacral nerve plexus, which emerges from the lower spinal cord. Pain travels along the path of the nerve, which radiates from the lower back or buttock downwards, along the back of the thigh and into the calf and sometimes the ankles and feet.
The type of pain can vary individually, from a dull ache to a tingling, burning pain, or a sharp, tearing or electric-like sensation. Symptoms typically occur on one side of the body, and can sometimes be accompanied by numbness or muscular weakness in the affected parts.
There are a number of potential causes of sciatica, including herniated spinal disc (‘slipped disc’), injury, pregnancy, piriformis syndrome. Lifestyle or occupational risk factors include prolonged sitting or heavy lifting.
If your sciatica is a new condition with recent onset, and a clear cause (injury, or pregnancy related, for example), you can safely self treat with homeopathic medicines, so long as you follow the minimum dose principle. If on the other hand your condition is chronic and long term, perhaps recurring in intermittent episodes, or with persistent pain, it is advisable to work with a homeopath for professional care. In chronic cases successful treatment involves a more detailed case history, looking at the origins of your sciatica, and your prior health history. In these cases self treatment can support you palliatively and reduce the need for pharmaceutical pain relief, while you consider professional care options.
The choice of appropriate homeopathic medicines relies on your individual symptom profile, including the character of the pain, and the factors and circumstances that ease or aggravate it. You will find below a selection of some of the most commonly used homeopathic medicines in the treatment of sciatica, with brief details of their homeopathic indications.
As always, if symptoms are severe and there is cause for concern, seek medical advice from your usual healthcare provider without delay.
Hypericum
Hypericum is the first remedy to think of for injuries to the sciatic nerve. The pain is felt intensely, with sharp or cutting sensations, and shooting along the path of the nerve. The affected limb may feel weak or numb, and the pain is eased by lying down.
Ruta
Ruta is one of the main remedies for sciatica brought on by blunt trauma and bruising. The pain is typically worse for sitting or lying down, better during the daytime when moving about, and extends from the lower back downwards to the hips. The pain in this case is deep seated, and felt as if in the bones. The hips and thighs feel weak and bruised, and the legs feel as if they will give way on rising.
Gnaphalium
Gnaphalium is a lesser known remedy in the Compositae(Asteraceae) family, alongside Arnica and Bellis perennis. Pain is more often right sided (though sometimes left), and radiates from hip to foot. Pain is typically accompanied by numbness in the affected limb. Symptoms tend to be worse for lying down and especially at night, and also worse for stretching the leg out. Cold wet weather aggravates symptoms. Some relief may be felt by sitting with bent knees, or pulling the knee towards the abdomen.
Kali phos
Kali phos is a well known homeopathic remedy, also used as a cell salt (or tissue salt), which has a strong affinity for the nerves. It is indicated in sciatica which feels better for moving about, and also better for warmth and worse in a cold environment. Characteristic of Kali phos is a sciatica which extends all the way to the feet, with pain in the soles.
Colocynthis
Colocynthis is a useful remedy in sciatica which has persistent pain when lying, sitting, standing and walking - the person can obtain no relief in any position, and this is especially so when they are in bed at night. The pain is often intense, with a crushing, clamping or vise-like sensation in the hip, and heaviness or numbness in lower limbs. Pain is somewhat relieved by firm pressure (including lying on the painful side) and heat, and is more often right-sided. Where this remedy is indicated, the person is often emotional with the pain - it may make them notably angry or irritable.
Aconite
Aconite can be helpful in sciatica which comes on suddenly, and is worse at night. The person is restless with the pain, and the affected parts can feel numb, heavy and tingling, or as if tightly bandaged and constricted. Feet and toes can feel numb and cold, and there is weakness in the legs, especially after sitting.
Phytolacca
In a Phytolacca case, the sciatic pain is more typically right sided, especially felt down the outer side of the right thigh, and is better for lying down. It is much worse on getting up from bed, to the point that the person dreads getting up. Symptoms are worse when the weather changes, and especially for wet weather. The character of the pain is typically cutting or tearing, or felt like an electric shock.
Gelsemium
Gelsemium is one of the key remedies used in sciatica that comes on in pregnancy. There is typically a violent stabbing pain in the hip, and burning sciatic pain that extends down to the foot, with pain in the sole while walking. The pains are markedly worse for rest, disturbing sleep, and also on beginning to move. The legs may be weak and heavy.
Dioscorea
Dioscorea is a remedy with a strong affinity for the sciatic nerve. Symptoms are more typical on the right side, and shoot or radiate from the thigh downwards. Standing on tiptoe seems to ease the pain, along with lying completely still. Pains are worse for movement or sitting up. The character of the pain is typically unbearably intense, described as cutting, twisting or grinding.
