Role of a sports physio in personal challenges
"Watching Sara Cox, undertake her ultra marathon challenge has bought back so many memories of what it means to be a sports physio alongside personal journeys. Last night I watched as the physio rubbed her red raw legs, put needles in her ITB and watched the sports scientist drawer her a freezing bath. All these treatments are to relax muscles, reduce blood pooling and to aid recovery. But all work best (in my mind) alongside having the right physio with you.
I loved being part of teams and helping, watching and being a part of people’s dreams. I still love being a part of people’s team. I have athletes running marathons, 100milers or swimming the channel- and I always feel privileged to be the one in their corner. To be trusted to be part of their journey.
I could hear Sara Cox getting panicky the other day at her lack of sleep and when she came off air I thought her physio and sports scientists will be helping her reframe her thoughts, helping her see that she can achieve what she thinks is unachievable.
It’s such a profound role in someone’s journey- you hear and see the down parts of injury, panic and fear but equally you get to celebrate the good, the positive steps out of injury and celebrations at the end.
It’s always a privilege. So pick your team well for your next challenge and COME SARA! We are all willing you on!!!" - Faith Cripps, Clinic Director
