When that certain someone (there's nearly always one!) in the office gets competitive..

Sad but beautifully touching. 💞

Sad but beautifully touching. 💞

“Yesterday I witnessed something that took my breath away. I heard a sound at the window of the cottage. When I looked, a cedar waxwing had hit the window and fallen to the deck. It’s mate stood beside it. It was clear that the fallen bird was dead. I turned away for a moment and when I looked again, it’s mate had hopped over. It lay down beside its partner, their heads touching. It closed its eyes and passed over to Spirit with its mate. The sadness and beauty of the moment was such a privilege to witness. If anyone has ever doubted that animals feel emotion and love, this moment was absolute proof of both. Nature truly has much to teach us.” ❤

See the hole in the back of the Birds tongue? It is called a Glottis. It is the opening of their airway (trachea). All birds have this, you just can't see it so easily in most birds. The Glottis is the opening of the pathway directly to their lungs. This is why you should never drip water into a bird's open mouth. The water flows over the tongue and goes right into the Glottis, through the trachea and sits in the bird's lungs. (Called Aspiration)

Unlike humans, Birds cannot cough water out of their lungs so the water just sits in their lungs and they slowly suffocate with each breath, as well as can get a bacterial infection like pneumonia. This is why you should never drip water into a bird's open mouth. It takes a trained avian rehabilitator to properly hydrate a bird without causing more damage.

When you find a bird keep it contained and dark and quiet. If it's a baby, keep it very warm and get it to a licensed professional immediately. It's not only the law, but the right thing to do if you want it to have the best chances of survival.

Last year, nurse Laura and her dog Jenny demonstrated the 5 second rule! This post had over 1 million view so we thought best to share again with the hot weather staying 🌞

As it hots up over the summer remember the 5 second rule!

Put your hand (or the back of your hand as it’s more sensitive) on the pavement - If you can’t hold it there comfortably for five seconds because it’s too hot, it’s too hot for your dogs paws for walks 🐾
