🩵✨ DEMENTIA FRIENDS ✨🩵

This week some of our Sienna Home Care team had the privilege of attending a Dementia Friends session with the lovely Val Down, an ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Society 💙

It was such a valuable training session where we deepened our understanding of dementia and Alzheimer’s, became official Dementia Friends, and shared personal stories. Many of these were moving and heartbreaking, but they reminded us why compassion, understanding, and person-centred care are at the heart of everything we do.

A big thank you to Val for leading such an inspiring and insightful session 🙏🏽 🤩

💜 Lisa’s Story 💜

My Mum, once full of life and the centre of every conversation, slowly fell silent. Forgetfulness turned into a devastating diagnosis in May 2025 — Vascular Dementia and Alzheimer’s. Despite the news, she was the strong one, reassuring us while we struggled to come to terms with it.

For a short while, we still had the Mum/Nan we knew and loved, until a simple UTI changed everything. What should have been a routine recovery caused a sudden decline — she forgot how to make breakfast, shower, or even use the toilet. The hardest part was her forgetting who family members were, far sooner than we ever expected.

From the outside she’s still the same beautiful woman with her infectious smile, but inside she’s fighting a battle she cannot win — and we stand by her side through every step 🫶🏽

💜Jessica’s Story💜

My grandad passed away in 2018 after a 3-year battle with dementia. He and my grandma had been married for 53 years, but those last years were incredibly hard. His dementia made him aggressive, especially towards her as his main carer, and she had very little support. It’s heartbreaking when the person in front of you looks the same, but no longer feels like the person you’ve always known.

Despite the changes, he still loved seeing family, going to the pub, and ordering his usual pie with a pint — alcohol-free, though he never realised! Towards the end, medication to manage his aggression sadly caused a brain aneurysm. But he passed peacefully at home, after a lovely day with his wife and son reminiscing and watching football.

That day, I lost a piece of myself. But I’ll always remember my grandad as the man he was before dementia — full of love, laughter, and life 💜
