I am thrilled to announce that I am now a fully qualified Equine Podiatrist - holding a level 5 Lantra accredited diploma in Equine Podiatry.

What a journey… 3 years of blood, sweat and (many) tears!
A massive thank you to everyone involved in the past three years, from cadavers to case studies I have learnt so much and met some lovely horses and people along the way.
None of this would’ve been possible without my amazing mentor Emma Baker; Equine Podiatry DEP MEPA who has given me endless support through the ups and downs, reminding me as Jayne said “it will all be fine”💞
And I suppose the biggest thank you of all goes to my darling girl Poppy, who began this journey for me all those years ago in 2018.

Here’s to a lifetime of helping and learning from these incredible animals, the privilege is mine❤️

Repair Horn📢

This is a great example of how the hoof lays down repair horn to maximise functionality when needed…
This RH belongs to a lovely section D called Layla.
As well as removing her front shoes, we found this repair horn over an old bar abscess on her RH.

Her owners were slightly confused and worried about what they were looking at on her hoof…
The abscess has blown off the bar and severely destabilised her medial heel.
The quickly produced repair horn has covered all of our usual landmarks…
It extends from her frog, covering the collateral groove, bar, seat of corn…
Although she’s been left without much bar material, once trimmed we managed to preserve some heel for her.

A hoof perfectly doing hoof things!

❗️Important reminder - just because the grass isn’t there, doesn’t mean they aren’t eating it!!

This is a section from my grass track, and as you can see from the surrounding grass, it’s definitely been growing! My horses have been on their track overnight for approx 3 weeks.

If your field looks like this - it’s likely because your horses have eaten it all!🌾

As always, management and balance are key!☺️✔️

Milly’s progress 27th Jan - 10th May

Milly is a 6year old New Forest Pony who was previously diagnosed with navicular changes and coffin joint arthritis.
Milly is definitely the most accident prone horse I trim - you name it, she’s probably injured it! Although we have some other ongoing issues, this historic seedy toe is now gone!🙌🏻

Thanks to her owners dedicated packing, cleaning and commitment to dietary and management changes, she’s now able to enjoy some ridden work with Milly, in boots and therapeutic pads after barely riding her since she bought her 2 years ago!🫶🏻🌤️

That’s a win to end the week!😌💕

I thought I’d share a super easy way we can help support our horses and their metabolic function this springtime!

Nature provides us so many great plants in abundance, so weather you go searching in your own fields or your horses are hedgerow snacking on a hack, here are some of my favourites…

🌱Cleavers - usually found alongside nettles, cleavers are great for support the lymphatic system, are rich in silica, and being mildly diuretic can help with filled legs or swellings.

🌱Nettle - great to use as a springtime tonic and blood cleanser, nettles are full of vitamin C and have been known to promote circulation and aid in arthritis. If you have a patch in your field, cut them down and let them wilt to loose their sting and your horses will enjoy them!

🌱Hawthorn - one of the best natural tonics for the heart and circulatory system! Hawthorn contains flavonoids which dilate the peripheral blood vessels, improving blood supply to areas of inflammation.

🌱Mint - Great for soothing the digestive tract as well as enticing fussy eaters, mint with soothe and relax and is useful for stressy horses or those prone to ulcers.

🌱Dandelion - rich in potassium, magnesium and calcium, dandelions have a diuretic and hepatic action, acting as a great tonic and cleanser, especially for the kidneys and liver.

🌱Willow - Known as natures aspirin, willow is a wonder herb! Analgesic, anti- inflammatory, tonic, antiseptic… the list goes on! The bark contains salicylic acid giving it its ani-inflammatory function. There are various types of willow trees so make sure to do your research to find one nearby you.

Most importantly give your horses the choice, and don’t feed if you aren’t sure it’s safe!

So much to like here!

Here’s a great little visual from a hoof I trimmed this morning!

The left side hasn’t been trimmed yet, see how small the surface area of the heel is (in blue). Compare that to the right side, we’ve easily doubled to available surface area for this horse to load the heels. This is so important for the overall health of the hoof, internal soft tissue structures and general soundness of the horse.

This is why it’s so important to keep trim cycles at an appropriate length, this is just 5 weeks of growth for this horse, and look what a difference it makes!

Here’s a little transformation I am rather pleased with!

These feet belong to a lovely ex-racer called Pots.
When I first saw Pots he was lame, couldn’t weight bare on his hind feet without constant shuffling, had a very upset hind gut, and was generally a very poorly boy.

He has been on a 2 week trim cycle to keep those heels from collapsing and in just around 3 months he has totally transformed. Not only are his feet looking much better, but the rest of his body is healing too! But don’t be fooled, this isn’t just something that can just be trimmed out of these feet… Pots’ owner has been incredibly diligent in looking after these feet, and making sure Pots has everything he needs, no questions asked - what a lucky boy!

Very excited to see how these feet look in another 3 months time😌
