🫀Did you know that heart attacks are more common during the winter?

When you’re cold, blood vessels narrow, raising blood pressure and heart rate. This is a normal response, but if you have a heart condition, it can increase your risk of a heart attack - especially during exercise.

Look after your heart this winter by:

👕 Layering up with thin layers to trap heat

🍲 Enjoying warming meals & hot drinks for energy

🧤 In very cold weather, adding a hat, scarf & gloves when heading out

Make sure you know the warning signs of a heart attack, and if you think you or someone else might be having one, call 999 for an ambulance immediately.

Velindre Cancer Service, alongside Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, are proud to celebrate the opening of the brand-new Velindre @ Nevill Hall Chemotherapy Unit in partnership with Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.

This purpose-built unit at Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny will make it easier for people across Gwent and South Powys to access expert cancer care closer to home. Open every Tuesday and Thursday, it will deliver around 20 chemotherapy sessions a day, around 15% of Velindre’s total daily chemotherapy capacity. This expansion helps us meet rising demand while reducing long travel times for patients.

Designed with comfort and dignity at its heart, the new space includes:
🪑 7 comfortable chemotherapy chairs
👩‍⚕️ A dedicated team of Velindre nurses providing person-centred care
🌄 Large windows with calming views of the Abergavenny hills

The unit welcomed its first patients last week, with care delivered by our wonderful team of Velindre nurses.

Carl James, Interim Chief Executive of VUNHST, said: "We are committed to providing patients with high quality care as locally as possible. The opening of the Velindre @ Nevill Hall Chemotherapy Unit is another important step on this journey. Our partnership with Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is well established and we are excited to be able to provide offer services to patients from across the whole of South East Wales at this facility. From now on patients will be able to receive both radiotherapy and chemotherapy at Nevill Hall which should improve their overall experience.”

Did you know around £9.6 million is wasted every year in Gwent on unused or unnecessary repeat prescriptions? That’s money, medicines, and care going to waste and we need your help to change that.

Staying Well: Medicines can expire and may not work as they should. Stockpiling can lead to drug shortages, putting others at risk.
Staying Safe: Unused meds at home are a danger to children and pets. They’re prescribed just for you, never share them.
Staying Green: Once medicines leave the pharmacy, they can’t be reused. Hand unused meds back to your pharmacy and help protect our environment

Here’s how you can help:
✅ Check what you already have before ordering more.
✅ Open your prescription bag at the pharmacy and return anything you don’t need before leaving.
✅ Talk to your pharmacy team if your meds have changed or you're not taking something anymore.

Together, we can cut waste, protect our environment, and keep Gwent healthy.

Only order what you need 👉 https://orlo.uk/evBmk

Help prevent the spread of norovirus 🤒.

If you have symptoms:

🧼Wash your hands regularly with soap and water. Using a hand sanitizer won’t kill norovirus.
🚽 Use a separate toilet if possible.
⏰ Stay at home 48 hours after your symptoms stop.

We are seeing a significant increase of Norovirus cases across Gwent which is continuing to impact our services.

We are asking people not to visit relatives in any of our hospitals if they have been unwell with symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting, and only visit if they have been free of symptoms for at least 48 hours.

Thank you for your ongoing support this Winter.
