As the world marks World Mental Health Day today, for Jami, preventing su***de in the community and educating people around the subject are a priority every single day of the year.

Jami’s adult mental health support provides life-changing – and sometimes lifesaving – support to people with mental illness and distress. We are a safety net, sometimes an emergency service, making the difference between life and death.
John, who has received peer support through Jami and is now a Jami community champion, talks about his lived experience.

“When I woke up in the hospital, I saw all my family and friends around me, and it was very humbling to realise I meant a lot to people. The way Jami supported me made me feel understood and appreciated. They have changed my life.

“If it wasn’t for Jami, I probably wouldn’t be alive today. My chats with my peer support workers were something to look forward to each week. Jami has listened to me, helped me, and been a comfort to me. But, most of all, it has given me hope for life, hope for the future and hope to my family that I’ll be around for many more years to come.”

Jami plans to launch a new community su***de prevention programme for communal lay and spiritual leaders and motivated community members early next year. The programme has been designed to reflect the community’s sensitivities and needs and will also cover postvention – the actions Jami takes to support the community after a su***de. A panel of community champions with lived experience has guided the process of creating the new course and Jami is working with Middlesex University to evaluate the process.

It is vital that we talk about mental health, suicidal thoughts and plans and reach out for support when we need it, as well as understand how we can support others.

If you need help or are supporting someone else, visit jamiuk.org/get-support or call 020 8458 2223. For 24/7 support, call the Samaritans on 116 123 or for SHOUT, text Jami to 85258.

🌍 World Mental Health Day 2025 🌍

This year’s theme focuses on access to mental health services — supporting mental health in catastrophes and emergencies.

Everyone deserves the right to protect their mental wellbeing, no matter what they’re going through. 🧡

Following the events of October 7, Jami, in partnership with Thrive London (Mayor of London’s Office), provided the community with vital resources to support people’s psychological responses.

Two years on from October 7th, many in our community continue to feel its impact and we know this is a difficult time.

The rise in antisemitism, as witnessed last week on Yom Kippur in Manchester, and the ongoing conflict in the region have affected people’s wellbeing and mental health in different ways.

It remains important that we support one another. Jami, part of Jewish Care, has developed resources to help us understand our reactions and find practical ways to look after ourselves and others.

“I honestly don’t know how we would have managed without Jami.”

When we found out that our son was self-harming and had suicidal thoughts, we recognised we needed support, too.

In our weekly sessions with Jess – our carer peer support worker – we talked about how we were individually dealing with our son’s problems, knowing Jess understood because she’d been through it all too. Her support helped us come to terms with what happened, to understand it wasn’t our fault, and to cope with looking after our son and ourselves. We started this journey feeling terribly ashamed of ourselves and our parenting skills. However, Jami gave us hope that we could get through this. And with Jami behind us, we have.

This Yom Kippur, please consider making a gift to Jami. Together, we can ensure that no one has to face mental illness alone. Just call 020 8922 2600, or visit jamiuk.org/roshhashanah to donate. 🧡

We are the Mental Health service for our community.

For 30 years Jami has provided practical and emotional support for the mental health of the Jewish community. Jami’s vision is a Jewish community which accepts, acknowledges and understands mental illness. A community which is resilient and has the capacity and capability to be healthy. A community in which symptoms of mental illness are as recognisable as a heart attack and trigger an equally appropriate First Aid response. A community in which Parity of Esteem is a reality and an environment which helps, not hinders recovery.

We work with individuals, communities and organisations to help prevent mental illness from developing, improve early intervention and promote wellbeing.

We understand that everyone’s experience of mental illness is different. We provide practical and emotional support for everyone affected by a mental health problem, the person with the diagnosis, friend, relative or employer. This includes:

Supporting around 1,300 people at any one time and reaching thousands more through our community education
