When Dr Charlotte Benjamin decided to celebrate her 50th birthday with friends and family, she not only chose to host her party at Head Room, Jami’s social enterprise café, supported by The Maurice Wohl Charitable Foundation, but she also asked her friends and family to donate to Jami rather than bringing her gifts. 🎁

Making a donation, or encouraging your friends and family to give to a cause that is important to you, is an inspirational way to mark a special occasion. So, if you’ve got a wedding, anniversary, birthday or bar/bat mitzvah coming up, make it extra meaningful by signing up to our Celebratory Giving here: jamiuk.org/fundraisers 🎉

👩‍⚕️ “We’re giving people back a sense of purpose — and hope they thought they’d lost.” Rachael De Jesus Jones, Occupational Therapist & Vocational Initiatives Coordinator at Jami.

At the heart of Jami’s Vocational Support service is Rachael De Jesus Jones, whose passion for helping people reconnect with meaningful activity is changing lives.

Working alongside a dedicated team, Rachael supports adults over 25 living with mental illness and distress — helping them take small, achievable steps toward volunteering, education, skills training, and paid work.

🗣 “Deciding to do something can be a huge step when someone’s been isolated for years. Our role is to build confidence, explore opportunities, and walk that journey with them — at their pace.”

Through one-on-one support and monthly group volunteering days, Rachael and the team empower individuals to rediscover their strengths, connect with community, and believe in themselves again.

🌱 “One service user never imagined he’d be a volunteer. After a few sessions with us, he’s now actively looking for a role. That’s real progress.”

Jami’s Vocational Support isn’t just about work — it’s about restoring identity, dignity, and belonging.

We’re delighted to share the summer issue of Jami Matters, highlighting the life-changing difference that Jami makes to young people and adults whose mental illness and distress make everyday life a struggle. It’s only because of your support that we’re able to provide these vital services to those of us in the community who need them, so a big thank you. 🤗

Jami was delighted to be involved in the recent All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) meeting on su***de and self-harm prevention, which focused on men’s mental health. Samaritans are the secretariat for this key group with a passionate following from the voluntary sector. 🧡

Philippa Carr, Jami’s senior mental health education and su***de prevention manager (pictured right), joined representatives from other APPG member organisations to hear about some of the amazing work that goes on in the field at a community level through Andys Man Club, a men’s su***de prevention charity offering free peer-to-peer support groups across the United Kingdom and online, and through the UK Men's Sheds Association, which are community spaces for men to connect, converse, create and have fun, helping to reduce loneliness and isolation. Like Jami’s energetic work in social engagement, both groups have connection and community at their heart.

The meeting, co-hosted by Liz Twist MP (pictured left) for Blaydon and Consett Constituency (who chairs the APPG) and Jake Richards MP for Rother Valley, looked through the lens of life crisis being the critical factor in this tragic picture for men.

Jami continues to campaign for reducing stigma in mental health and recognising that mental health and life crisis are interconnected areas that need to be understood together, to help more men come forward for support when they need it most.

We will be meeting MPs in September at a special event at Westminster, organised by the The Jewish Leadership Council and hosted by Liz Twist MP, where we will be sharing more about our work in su***de prevention and mental health. What would you want to tell MPs about your experience of life crisis and mental health? Please feel free to comment below.

We are delighted to share that people receiving our talking therapies support will now benefit from four new counselling suites, generously funded by The Wohl Legacy. This will help to enhance our specialist mental health support available through our Talking Therapies service for young people and adults in the Jewish community who depend upon it.

Jami’s Talking Therapies service supports people struggling with everything from anxiety and depression to self-harm and suicidal ideation.
The new Wohl Counselling Suites and waiting area at Jewish Care’s Maurice and Vivienne Wohl Campus in Golders Green have been designed for one-to-one counselling. Each suite is themed to connect to nature and the four seasons of the year.

In addition to offering bespoke, welcoming and safe spaces for talking therapy sessions for Jami clients of all ages, we are now also able to support the growing number of young people and adults living with mental illness because of the extra therapists we have recruited, too.

This means we can extend our talking therapy sessions for adults to now include young people aged 11–18, who are already accessing Jami’s support through The Dangoor Children and Young Person’s Service.

The support of The Wohl Legacy has come at a time when the lack of mental health services available to people coincides with an increasing number of those struggling with their mental health. It can be challenging to talk about how we feel when we are finding it difficult to cope. Being able to provide our clients with an appropriate, warm and welcoming environment to express their emotions is, therefore, so important. 🧡

We are the Mental Health service for our community.

For 30 years Jami has provided practical and emotional support for the mental health of the Jewish community. Jami’s vision is a Jewish community which accepts, acknowledges and understands mental illness. A community which is resilient and has the capacity and capability to be healthy. A community in which symptoms of mental illness are as recognisable as a heart attack and trigger an equally appropriate First Aid response. A community in which Parity of Esteem is a reality and an environment which helps, not hinders recovery.

We work with individuals, communities and organisations to help prevent mental illness from developing, improve early intervention and promote wellbeing.

We understand that everyone’s experience of mental illness is different. We provide practical and emotional support for everyone affected by a mental health problem, the person with the diagnosis, friend, relative or employer. This includes:

Supporting around 1,300 people at any one time and reaching thousands more through our community education
