Exhale Group would like to share details of an upcoming event we are contributing to, being led by Intercultural Youth Scotland - Black and Scottish: Hear My Voice!

When? 12/05/2024 1-5pm
Where? Civic House, Glasgow
Who is this for? Black Youth in Scotland (aged 16-30)

Event Synopsis
Intercultural Youth Scotland is proudly announcing the ‘Black and Scottish: Hear My Voice’ event in collaboration with Black Equity Organisation and Operation Black Vote (OBV). Tailored for Black youth aged 16-30, the event aims to amplify their voices and aspirations, particularly as they are the least registered group of voters in the region.

The event will feature a keynote address by Lee Jasper and Timi Okuwa, sharing insights on Black liberation and empowerment in Scotland. Additionally, young poets from Intercultural Youth Scotland will perform spoken word pieces, expressing their visions for the future, including Ace Vision, JJ Fadaka and Ria Andrews.

A panel discussion will engage young advocates working on education policies within schools, exploring the challenges and opportunities in the education system, and the work they’ve been doing with Scottish Governments – looking at limitations and current successes.

An interactive workshop, potentially centered around building the Black Manifesto in collaboration with Exhale Group, will enable participants to collaborate on the Black Britian’s Mandate – articulating the aspirations, demands, and priorities of Scottish Black youth. This mandate will serve as a tool for young people to shape their ideal futures and agenda.

Participants will have the opportunity to register to vote at the event, emphasising the importance of exercising one’s power in shaping Scotland’s future. Food, music, and community-building activities will be provided, fostering connections and collaborations.

The event will also include calls to action for local groups, charities, and individuals to contribute to a future where the voices of Black youth are actively listened to and acted upon.

Mental health

"Always Make time for YOU"

One thing I have come to realise is that there will never be enough time to do everything especially as a family man in full time employment.

You can easily get caught up in the never ending routine of parenting and Work-Life.

Whilst those are primary commitment and a very integral part of "responsibility parenting" you need to create a regular time to refuel so you don't run-out and burnout.

I am a big believer of the saying " You can't give what you don't have". As a family man, you can't love affectionately if you don't embrace self-care.

That is why I infused in my my busy week a personal care-plan as follows :

1. Daily good food - as balance as possible.

2. Regular sporting activities x 2 per week with other men. Form of socialising and we talk believe me 😆.

3. Long lie in bed x 1 per week.

The thing is, you've got to plan for your personal care.
What, When and How doesn't really matter as the doing itself at the beginning.
Decide what and when works best for you and get moving. Twick as many times as possible until you find your Rhythm.

If you're struggling for ideas start from a good diet, good sleep and 10,000 steps a day.

Self-care is one of the vital-core to becoming everything you want and more for you, family, community etc. So embarce it.

One last point, find your safe place and share your burden e.g friends, family, anonymous helpline etc.

Self-care It is not selfish, it is refueling.

Self-care It is not selfish, it is for strength.

Self-care It is not selfish, it is for sustainability.

On well-being, radio presenter shares…"For me, prioritising self-care and taking care of my mental health means adopting a few key practices. First and foremost, I make a conscious effort not to take things personally. When faced with situations that may trigger negative emotions, I refocus my thoughts and remind myself not to internalize them.

Additionally, practicing gratitude has been a powerful tool for me. I make it a habit to reflect on the things I am grateful for, whether big or small. This practice helps shift my perspective and cultivates a positive mindset.

Long walks have become an essential part of my self-care routine. They provide me with an opportunity to clear my head, gain clarity, and reconnect with nature. It's amazing how simply immersing myself in the outdoors can have a soothing effect on my mental well-being.

Surprisingly, shedding tears has proven to be cathartic for me. Allowing myself to express my emotions through crying serves as a release and helps me process difficult feelings. It's a natural and healthy way for me to let go and find emotional relief.

In terms of entertainment, I find solace in listening to music and indulging in a good comedy. Music has a way of uplifting my spirits, providing comfort, and allowing me to escape momentarily. Laughter, on the other hand, brings joy and lightness to my life, serving as a wonderful stress reliever.

Lastly, talking to someone about how I feel has been incredibly beneficial. It's important to have a trusted individual in my life who is willing to listen without judgment or criticism. Being able to share my thoughts and emotions openly provides me with validation, support, and a sense of relief.

These are some of the ways I prioritise self-care and nurture my mental health. Everyone's journey is unique, so I encourage individuals to explore different strategies and find what works best for them. Remember, self-care is a continuous process that requires attentiveness and self-compassion."

First up in our sharing on mental health this month is Bennie! Based is Edinburgh she states that “Self-care is a holistic practice that involves prioritising and addressing your physical, emotional, and mental well-being. It’s about recognising you needs, setting boundaries, and taking deliberate actions to reduce stress and improve your overall quality of life.
Key self care practices include prioritising sleep, healthy eating, regular exercise, practicing mindfulness, setting boundaries, engaging in hobbies, seeking social connections, and if needed seeking professional help.
Self-care is a personalised journey, and it’s important to find what works best for you and make it a consistent part of your life. It’s a proactive step towards better mental and emotional well-being.

Sometimes it is difficult to practice self-care, because we tend to abandon ourselves, and instead focus on being there for other people. One of the ways we can learn to become more self-aware is to show compassion towards ourselves by treating ourselves, kindly, and forgiving our own mistakes. Don’t be too hard on yourself.

Additionally, you can establish self-care rituals, like a morning or evening routine to create a sense of structure and stability in your life. One of the things I have found helpful is saying yes to myself, which is just as important as saying no when needed. I say yes to the activities to bring me joy and fulfilment.

Winter is around the corner when the days begin to get very short, dark, and sometimes gloomy which might increase the manifestation of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). It is therefore important, especially at this time for us to become more conscious of our well-being and find ways to take care of ourselves.” To get in touch checkout her site https://www.beesanpsychotherapy.com
