6 Interesting Facts About The History of Funerals 🕊

💙 Wearing the colour Black
Wearing black at funerals is a tradition dating back to Roman times, when mourners wore a dark toga (toga pulla) to honour the deceased. This custom continued through British history, especially during the Victorian era, and remains a respectful choice today unless otherwise specified.

💙The word Funeral
The word ‘funeral’ is believed to have first been used by Geoffrey Chaucer, who is often considered the father of the English language. It appeared in writing in his Middle English work The Knight’s Tale, in which he refers to a ‘funeral service’ after a character passes away. It was published in 1386, making it the first written use of the word funeral that we know of.

💙 Flowers and Candles
Flowers were originally used at funerals to mask unpleasant odours. While modern practices have removed this need, the tradition continues today for its symbolism and beauty.

💙Burials used to be more common than cremation
While cremation dates back to the Anglo-Saxon period, burial became more common over time, largely due to Christian beliefs about resurrection. Today, both burial and cremation are equally popular.

💙Victorians popularised carved headstones
While grave markers existed earlier, the Victorians made carved, inscribed headstones widespread—often including Bible verses, messages, and decorative art. This tradition continues today.

💙Rosemary was once used instead of flowers
Rich in symbolism—remembrance, loyalty, and eternal life—rosemary was often used at funerals. Its strong scent also helped mask odours before modern mortuary practices developed.
