Fiona Brown Realistic Pilates Expert One of my favourite things is helping clients feel better in their body with Realistic Pilates & yoga How can Realistic Pilates help you?

If you are feeling stiff, achy and generally sluggish when moving then you will certainly benefit from Realistic Pilates. These classes are perfectly suited to you regardless of your age, fitness level or body type. There are dozens of classes out in the world that appeal to the young, slim and 'fit'. My classes tend to attract women age 50+ though not exclusively. You will also benefit if you have any of the following:

Back problems - upper or lower back
Stiff neck/shoulders - difficulty reaching high objects or fastening your bra
Lack of abdominal tone ...or the feeling that your abs 'don't work'
Hip or knee replacement - no matter how long ago
Post Natal muscle separation -Diastasis Recti
Poor posture giving the impression you are not as tall as you were when you were younger

Realistic Pilates is an accessible, dynamic and contemporary approach to Pilates Body Conditioning. Pilates is a method of body conditioning, which was developed over 80 years ago by Joseph Pilates. In my experience his classical repertoire is not suited to every one and when I first started teaching this method in the year 2000 I quickly discovered that there were not enough classes being taught at beginner level. I was so convinced there was a need for accessible beginner classes that I set about building an accredited training academy and since 2005 I have taught more than 350 fully qualified Pilates Instructors. By de-constructing the original exercises, whilst sticking to the overall principles of Pilates, I devised a way of making this extremely effective method of exercise accessible to all.

Who else is beginning to feel that their back/neck/ shoulders or indeed any joints – are feeling increasingly achy and stiff?

Why not join my new 6-Week Course for Newcomers and learn how Realistic Pilates can help you to move more confidently, comfortably and elegantly.

No more gentle grunts on standing up!

The principles of Pilates are Breath, Concentration, Control, Centring, Isolation and Precision and as a result it is unlikely that you will have done anything similar to this before.

My mantra of LESS IS MORE means that we work very specifically on technique and alignment before introducing any of the advanced/classical Pilates exercises.

Class numbers are small, and the atmosphere is welcoming and sociable – but don’t just take my word for it.

Read what some of my lovely clients have to say:

"Since I started Realistic Pilates eight weeks ago, I have noticed that I feel much more relaxed, grounded and comfortable in my body. Fiona is the best teacher and every class with her is fun as well as energising. If she has a space ...grab it!" ~Margaret Williamson

"Despite not being able to complete the course due to some health issues, then being abroad ...I do feel the benefit. Fiona is a teacher par excellence. You could not do better" ~Jenny McEwan

"I’m really enjoying the class so far and have just re-signed for the next block. I’ve had lower back pain, abdominal muscle separation and pelvic floor issues since I had my son four years ago. I’ve seen improvements in all three over the last few weeks. I’m standing taller and consciously adjusting the way I stand; both have an impact on my lower back – so simple, but a game changer in terms of the dull, persistent pain I was living with.
Fiona takes her time to explain why we’re doing certain exercises/stretches and I don’t feel at all self-conscious when I don’t get it straight away. The class is very inclusive and relaxed – for me, the perfect environment to learn how to heal and do something constructive for my body, and mind!" ~Lindsay D, 44

"Fiona just want to let you know I am a 75 year old who has enjoyed every Pilates class of yours I have attended. I feel I have more mobility and can now reach and stretch further than before I started. I certainly come away feeling very relaxed and looking forward to our next class. I enjoy the fact that it is a small friendly class and that you explain everything in an easy to understand and follow way. You keep us focused on the exercises in a relaxed and friendly way. I look forward to attending further classes." – Monica Brown, 75

The 6-Week Course for Newcomers starts on Thursday 24th August at 6.15pm in Active-X, Atholl Place, Edinburgh.

So ...why not book your slot now before Festival fever takes over your life.

I hope you do decide to join us. Your back, hips and knees will thank you for it.

Fiona 😊

If you or somebody you know has undergone surgery for breast cancer and are looking for a way to feel good about your body again ...this is the class for you.

I have designed an eight week course of Realistic Pilates classes to take account of exercise modifications based on years of experience and specialist training.

This is what my lovely client Isla had to say after attending these classes:

"A friend recommended Realistic Pilates with Fiona to me, after I had had a couple of awkward experiences trying out other Pilates classes. Having had a back flap reconstruction, breast cancer treatments and surgical complications I was left feeling alive but shattered!

I was looking for something to relieve the aches and tensions and find balance in my body again. I was nervous and not confident of my body. I had a one 1:1 session with Fiona, and immediately felt understood and safe to try out some Pilates movements - it was an amazing transformation for me!

Learning Realistic Pilates has reduced the aches and tensions, and I feel more comfortable and more in control of my body. Gradually, I have progressed to joining a regular Pilates class, hurrah! and really enjoy how it makes me feel.

Fiona is very at ease and understanding of any exercises or positions that are not suitable for me. After undergoing further surgery I knew I could trust Fiona to listen and guide me back into doing the movements that help me.

For these reasons I heartily encourage anyone who has had breast cancer treatment to try Realistic Pilates for themselves and feel the difference!"

The classes will be held in Rutland Wellness in Edinburgh's West End and will be suitable for you regardless of how long ago you were signed off by your consultant.

Do you know anybody with Diastasis Recti?

Let them know my class will be a GAME CHANGER ⭐️

This is a common condition post-pregnancy involving abdominal separation ...which in turn affects lower back strength.

Imagine my delight when I could help yet another client who is four years post natal ....and yet seeing a difference after a few short weeks.

Read what Lindsay had to say about the benefits she has felt since joining my Realistic Pilates classes -

“I’m really enjoying the class so far and have just re-signed for the next block.

I’ve had lower back pain, abdominal muscle separation and pelvic floor issues since I had my son four years ago.

I’ve seen improvements in all three over the last few weeks.

The class is very inclusive and relaxed – for me, the perfect environment to learn how to heal and do something constructive for my body, and mind!”

Thank you Lindsay - I can't wait to see what further improvements you will discover over the coming months.

Yet another reason to call my classes REALISTIC Pilates.

When Sarah was keen to share how much she enjoys my classes and include the fact that she suffers from Parkinson's ...it makes me proud that after my class Sarah feels energised but most importantly safe.

Thanks Sarah I'm looking forward to seeing what the next set of classes brings.

Focusing on reconnecting with core muscles which have been neglected through poor posture, bad habits and in some cases after injury.

As a direct result of our innovative approach, clients often experience improvements in confidence, self-esteem and self-awareness resulting in a new zest for life!

Ha ha!
I love this image 🤣
Back in the day I had a client who most probably would have worn a hat like this.

I also had a client who was so dedicated that she left an event early when the queen was in attendance ...rather than miss her 1:1 session with me! Now that is dedication 🤩
