One of the most common questions we’re asked is simple:

“Is vein treatment going to hurt?”

For many people, the idea of treatment can feel far worse than the reality.

Modern vein treatments are very different from the older surgical approaches people often imagine. Treatments are now minimally invasive, carried out under local anaesthetic and designed to make the experience as comfortable as possible.

In this video, Dr Rajesh Bhat explains:
→ Why modern vein treatment is far less invasive
→ How local anaesthetic is used
→ What patients typically experience during treatment
→ Why so many patients are surprised by how straightforward it feels

Our team also understands that reassurance matters just as much as treatment itself. Everything is carried out in a calm, supportive and relaxed environment.

You may have heard the terms EVLT or EVLA when researching varicose vein treatment, but what does it actually mean?

EVLT stands for Endovenous Laser Treatment, a modern, minimally invasive treatment used for certain types of varicose veins.

It works by using heat energy inside the affected vein to close it safely, helping redirect blood flow into healthier veins.

At Scottish Vein Centre, this treatment is carried out using local anaesthetic through a small pinhole access point, with no need for traditional surgery or an operating theatre.

In this video, Dr Rajesh Bhat explains:
→ When EVLT is used
→ What “truncal incompetence” means
→ How laser treatment works
→ What patients can typically expect during treatment

Every patient is different, which is why a detailed Doppler ultrasound scan is always carried out first to understand exactly what is happening beneath the surface.

What actually causes varicose veins?
Varicose veins happen when the small valves inside your veins stop working properly.

These valves are designed to keep blood moving in the right direction, back up towards the heart. When they become weak or damaged, blood can start to flow backwards and collect in the vein.

Over time, that extra pressure can cause the vein to enlarge, twist and become more visible.

For some people, this is hereditary. For others, factors like pregnancy, weight, age or a history of clotting can add to an existing weakness in the vein system.

Something many people do not realise is that vein problems are not always obvious on the surface.

Sometimes the underlying issue is there before larger varicose veins appear. It may first show as thread veins, discomfort, swelling or aching legs.

That is why we carry out a detailed Doppler ultrasound scan at every first assessment.

It helps us understand exactly what is happening beneath the surface, so any advice or treatment is based on facts, not guesswork.

Your first visit is all about understanding you, not rushing you.

We start with a detailed conversation about your symptoms, concerns and what you’re hoping to achieve.

You’ll then have a Doppler ultrasound scan, carried out by the same specialist who will guide your treatment. This allows us to see exactly what is happening beneath the surface.

Once the scan is complete, we will talk you through the results there and then.

If treatment is suitable, you’ll be given a clear, fully costed plan with no pressure to proceed.

It’s a calm, informative appointment designed to give you clarity and confidence in your next steps.

How do veins actually work?

It’s simpler than you might think. Your body has two types of blood vessels.

Arteries carry blood away from the heart.
Veins bring blood back to the heart.

The challenge is that blood in your legs has to travel upwards, against gravity. To make this happen, your veins rely on two things.

Small one way valves inside the veins that open to let blood flow up and close to stop it falling back down.

And your leg muscles, which help pump the blood upwards when you move. When everything is working well, blood flows in the right direction with ease.

But if those valves stop working properly, blood can start to flow backwards and pool in the veins. This is what leads to varicose veins.

It’s not something you’ve caused. It’s simply how the vein system changes over time.

Understanding how your veins work is often the first step in understanding what might be happening in your own legs.

If you’re trying to understand what vein treatment can really achieve, our website gallery is a helpful place to start.

It shows real patients who have had non surgical treatments at Scottish Vein Centre, often a combination of EVLT laser and foam sclerotherapy.

Every patient is different, and every treatment plan is tailored to what their scan shows and what is right for them.

We can’t cure varicose veins, but we can make a meaningful difference to how people feel day to day and how they feel about their legs.

The gallery is there to give you a realistic, honest view of what treatment can look like.

If you’re unsure where to begin, it’s a good place to explore before taking the next step.
