Great things happen when communities connect! 🙌

BAOS President, Rhian Jones, had the pleasure of attending the BAOMS conference recently at the invite of BAOMS President Kathy Fan - a great opportunity to support our OMFS peers and keep the conversation going between our associations!

All the speakers and topics were informative and useful for both Oral and OMF Surgeons! There’s plenty we can learn from each other 👏🏼

Welcome to Maria, our new London regional rep 👏🏼🎉

“I’m Maria Mullerat-Pigem, your new London Regional Representative for BAOS! I’m currently a Specialty Doctor in Oral Surgery and will be starting Specialty Training at the Eastman in September. I’ve worked across England in Oral Surgery, OMFS, and Paediatric Dentistry, and recently completed a fellowship with the Chief Dental Officer Scheme. This has given me valuable insight into NHS Dentistry and the wider Oral Surgery landscape. I’m excited to use this experience to enhance networking, promote collaboration, and support engaging educational opportunities for BAOS members. Outside of work, I’m a fitness enthusiast and ran the London Marathon last year—next up: Hyrox!”

📍Dental Leadership Network Meeting 9 | London

Great to see BAOS represented at the 9th meeting of the Dental Leadership Network – a vital event shaping the future of our profession.

With the theme “The Future is Here – How Do We Prepare?”, the day brought together leaders across dentistry to explore AI, sustainable healthcare, evolving leadership models, and innovation in workforce planning.

💡A standout moment? Seeing a slide from the 1921 Dentists Act that legally permitted pharmacists to extract teeth in urgent cases — as long as no anaesthetic was used! 🦷😳 Thankfully, things have moved on since then…

BAOS remains committed to ensuring oral surgery is represented in these key national discussions – influencing the direction of travel for a profession that’s modern, inclusive, and ready for the future.

Your participation in the UK surgical workforce census 2025 is crucial to understanding the real experiences of those working in surgery today.

We know your time is valuable, which is why the census is designed to be completed in just 10 minutes. Your previous responses have directly impacted our discussions with the government on workforce shortages, wellbeing and training opportunities.

Your feedback drives real change and helps us advocate for better working conditions for the entire surgical workforce. Complete the census by Monday 23 June. If you have any questions, please contact census@rcseng.ac.uk.

* Are you an enthusiastic member of the Oral Surgery Community who is keen to promote the specialty in your region?
* Would you like to be more involved with BAOS?
* Do you live in the East Midlands?

Covering postcodes: CB (Cambridge), CO (Colchester), DE (Derby), DN (Doncaster), IP (Ipswich), LE (Leicester), LN (Lincoln), NG (Nottingham), NR (Norwich), PE (Peterborough), S (Sheffield).

The Regional Rep Role is a great opportunity to get more involved with BAOS and to help Council keep in touch with members in your region. You are eligible to apply if you work in Oral Surgery as your principal position, or if you work in General Dental Practice and have Oral Surgery as a special interest. Unfortunately, DCTs (Dental Core Trainees) are not eligible to apply as there is an alternate role specifically for DCT representatives with BAOS.

The will start on 1 July 2025. Applicants must be BAOS members.

During your tenure you will be invited to organise a teaching session, usually lasting 1-1.5 hours. At present there is a continued demand for online webinars as opposed to face-to -face events. It is possible that this may change moving forwards. The new Regional Representatives would not be expected to organise a session within the few months of their new role allowing them time to settle in.

If you are interested in applying, please check your email for full details. Please send your completed application form to rita.capaldi@baos.org.uk by Wednesday 25 June 2025.

If you have any queries about the role, please contact us at: mail@baos.org.uk
