Do you have a legally compliant fire risk assessment in place for your business? 🔥

Under Scottish law, every workplace must carry out and regularly review a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment. This responsibility sits with the duty holder—and failure to comply can lead to enforcement action from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

However, one issue we see frequently is:

Many businesses assume their fire risk assessment is automatically included in their retained health and safety support. In reality, this isn’t always the case.

We regularly speak to organisations that discover that their assessment is either:
• Not included in their current package
• Out of date
• Or not carried out by a competent person

A proper assessment is more than just a visit on-site. A thorough approach involves:
• Reviewing existing documentation
• Conducting a detailed onsite assessment
• Producing a structured report highlighting any risks
• Discussing actionable recommendations

This ensures your business is compliant, protected, and prepared—not just ticking a box.

It’s worth checking:
✔️ Do you have a valid, up-to-date fire risk assessment?
✔️ Was it carried out by a competent professional?
✔️ Are actionable recommendations clearly documented?
✔️ Is it included in your current support package?

If you’re unsure about any of this, it’s always worth taking a moment to review your position— we're always happy to help so do get in touch if in doubt.

If you run a business in Scotland, a fire risk assessment isn’t optional—it’s a legal duty under the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 and Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations 2006. Here’s why it matters:

It’s the law – Duty holders must assess fire risks in all non-domestic premises to protect employees, customers, and visitors.

Protect people – Assessments identify who’s at risk and ensure safe evacuation, alarms, and fire controls are in place.

Identify and reduce hazards – From electrical risks to flammable materials, you must actively reduce fire risks “so far as reasonably practicable.”

Legal accountability & enforcement – You must record findings (especially with 5+ staff) and present them to the Fire & Rescue Service if required.

Avoid fines, prosecution & insurance issues – Non-compliance can lead to enforcement action, invalid insurance, or even criminal penalties.

Ongoing responsibility – Fire risk assessments must be reviewed regularly and updated when your premises or activities change.

A fire risk assessment isn’t just paperwork—it’s essential for legal compliance, safety, and business continuity.

If you need support, the Health and Safety Dept can help.

Horseplay may seem harmless or funny at the time, but in the workplace, it can lead to serious injuries, property damage, and a loss of productivity. The workplace is not the place for practical jokes, running, pushing, or any other behaviour that could compromise safety.

Please ensure your workplace culture is supported by a brief that outlines acceptable and appropriate behaviour

🐣 Easter treats in the workplace? Don’t forget allergy awareness.

Easter is a great time to share cakes, chocolate, and homemade treats with colleagues. But before bringing food into the workplace, it’s important to think about food allergies and intolerances.

Many Easter treats contain common allergens such as nuts, peanuts, milk, eggs, wheat, and soy. For someone with a serious allergy, even a small amount or cross-contamination can cause a severe reaction.

If you’re bringing in cakes or snacks to share, consider:

✔ Clearly labelling ingredients
✔ Avoiding products containing nuts where possible
✔ Keeping packaging so allergen information is available
✔ Being mindful of cross-contamination with homemade foods

A little awareness goes a long way in helping colleagues stay safe while still enjoying the Easter spirit.

If you would like to learn more about it, the Health and Safety Dept offers allergy awareness courses through our flexible eLearning platform. Just reach out to us for further information.

Have a safe and happy Easter! 🐰🌸

Fire Safety Saves Lives – Don’t Leave It to Chance

Every second counts in a fire. That’s why having a clear evacuation procedure, trained staff, and regular checks on escape routes is critical for every business.

Blocked exits, poor planning, or untrained staff can turn a small incident into a tragedy.

The reality in Scotland:
• 36 people lost their lives in fires in 2024–25
• Dozens more are injured every year in preventable incidents

Under the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 and Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations 2006, businesses must ensure safe evacuation and keep escape routes clear at all times.

Train your team

Keep exits clear and accessible

Regularly inspect and review procedures

If you need support, the Health and Safety Department can help by delivering in-person training or flexible e-Learning courses, giving your team the knowledge and confidence to respond effectively in the event of a fire.

Please reach out and help prevent fire before it starts.
