One of the greatest barriers to patient flow and timely discharge from hospital is the lack of staffed social care beds in the community, and the lack of care packages available for people to return home – or to another appropriate care setting.

Now is the time to commit to multi-year investment plans for local authorities and care providers.

Delayed Discharge data for Scotland in the financial year ending 31 March 2025 indicate that a daily average of 1,973 patients were delayed in hospital. This has a major impact on patient flow across the NHS- including A & E waiting times- as well as on the patients themselves and their families.

Our Health Priorities sets out proposals the next Scottish Government can adopt to reduce the level of delayed discharges: https://www.rcpe.ac.uk/news/scottish-parliament-election-college-says-principles-nhs-are-threatened-if-current-funding
