We’re delighted to introduce Alex, our newest Optical Consultant!

Originally from Peebles, Alex spent a short time living in London before settling in Edinburgh, where he’s spent the past 7 years building an impressive career in optics. With 10 years of retail experience – including 7 years in optics – Alex brings a wealth of knowledge and a passion for helping patients find the best visual solutions for their needs.

Before joining us, Alex also volunteered with Sense Scotland and worked part-time in a shoe shop before studying computing at college.

What Alex loves most about the job?

✨ Helping patients find the perfect vision solutions

Outside of work, you’ll likely find Alex enjoying gaming, music, football, films, and TV.

Protecting young eyes
Myopia (short-sightedness) is on the rise in children, but there are simple steps that can help reduce the risk of it developing or progressing.

☀️Get outdoors: At least two hours a day in natural daylight supports healthy eye development.
📲Take regular breaks from screens: Follow the 20-20-20 rule that is every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
💡Good posture and lighting: Reading and screen use should be at a comfortable distance and in well-lit rooms.
🗓️Regular eye exams: Early detection is key. The sooner myopia is spotted, the sooner we can manage it and protect your child’s vision for the future.

Children’s eye exams are free on the NHS and we make them relaxed and fun, so please make sure your child visits the optometrist at least every two years from their pre-school year.

A huge congratulations to Alishbah on achieving even more qualifications in optical care 👏✨

Over the years, she has shown incredible dedication to her training, consistently developing her skills and knowledge and now reaching Level 7 in optical care. It’s been amazing to see her growth and commitment throughout her journey.

We’re all so excited to see what comes next, and this is only the beginning. We’re hopeful she’ll soon be stepping into the dispensing opticians course as her journey continues.

At Birrell & Rainford, we believe looking after your eyes should not cost the earth.

Did you know we offer contact lens and contact lens packaging recycling in practice? That includes lenses, blister packs and foil lids. Simply bring them in and we will make sure they are responsibly recycled.

We also stock a range of eco conscious frames, made from recycled or sustainable materials, so you can make a more environmentally thoughtful choice when choosing your eyewear.

Small changes add up. By recycling your lenses and choosing sustainable options where possible, together we can help reduce waste and make a positive difference.

If you would like to know more about our recycling scheme or eco frame collections, just ask a member of the team next time you are in practice.

�Did you know up to 80% of learning is visual? A simple eye exam can make sure your child isn’t held back by vision problems in the classroom.

Finding yourself holding your phone a little further away?
If small print is becoming harder to read, especially in the evening, you may be experiencing presbyopia.

Presbyopia is a completely natural part of ageing, usually starting in your early to mid 40s. Over time, the lens inside the eye becomes less flexible, making it harder to focus on close objects. It is not a disease, and it does not mean there is anything wrong with your eyes. It simply means they need a little help with near vision.

You might notice:
• Difficulty reading menus or messages
• Needing brighter light for close work
• Eye strain or headaches when reading
• Holding things further away to see clearly

The good news is that presbyopia is easily managed. Options include reading glasses, varifocal lenses, occupational lenses for work, or multifocal contact lenses. We will talk you through what suits your lifestyle best.
