What are the 6c’s of care?

One of the guiding principles in providing high-quality, person centered care is the concept of the 6 Cs of care, which stand for Care, Compassion, Competence, Communication, Courage and Commitment.

These 6 Cs form the foundation of effective care, ensuring that individuals receive not only the treatment they need but also the respect, empathy, and dignity they deserve.

What does each C mean?

Care – providing assistance to individuals with empathy, attention, and respect for their needs.

Compassion – in the context of care, compassion means actively listening to clients and their families, offering reassurance, and showing kindness, even in challenging situations.

Competence – having the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities to provide safe and effective care.

Communication – whether communication is between care, with clients or with their families, good communication is vital in any healthcare setting.

Courage – courage in healthcare often involves standing up for what is right, even when it’s difficult. This could mean advocating for a client’s needs, challenging unsafe practices, or speaking up about concerns.

Commitment – reflects a dedication to always providing the best possible care. This value emphasises reliability, perseverance, and consistency.

Happy Disability Pride Month!

Today we are shining the spotlight on Disability Pride Month which was founded in 1990 with the aim of raising awareness and promoting the inclusion of people with disabilities. It also creates conversations among people who are not part of the disabled community on how best to support people with disabilities.

In 2019 Ann Magill created the Disability Pride flag shown below with the colours representing each type of disability:

- Red – physical disabilities
- Gold/yellow – neurodivergence
- White – invisible and undiagnosed disabilities
- Blue – mental health conditions and illnesses
- Green – sensory disabilities

The Disability support services website has a list of things to know and do when supporting the dignity of disabled people. You can read these here https://ow.ly/QTZu50WkuBY

Want to get involved? Here are some events you can join:

- Scope are hosting a free online event on the 23rd July ‘Turning Prejudice into Pride’. You can join their free online event here https://ow.ly/Vtk050WkuBZ
