You do know music can help provide pain relief, don’t you?

Telling a loved one to listen to music to ease their pain, well this might seem a tad facile to the recipient.

Yet research shows that music isn’t just a positive form of distraction from pain. Both the anticipation and actuality of listening to music can release natural opioids in the brain, which can help reduce pain.

In one study, participants listened to music while holding a hand in icy cold water. Not only did music prolong the time this could be tolerated, but there was even more benefit if the student had chosen the music themselves.

It is widely accepted further research needs to be done, but perhaps music can soon become an established part of a person’s pain relief toolkit.

Chronic pain is heavily stigmatised

This largely stems from the subjective nature of pain – because it is ‘invisible’ and can’t be measured objectively, people often experience doubt and mistrust from friends, family and healthcare professionals

Structural stigma appears in society’s policies and dominant cultural norms. In Pain Matters 90, Brooke Magel and Daniel Z. Buchman from the University of Toronto look at how this kind of stigma affects people with chronic pain – and how it might be reduced

It is unfortunately quite common for people in pain to be told by others (family, colleagues, healthcare professionals) that it must be ‘all in the mind’

UCL Professor Amanda C de C Williams gives some tips on how you can respond in issue 90 of Pain Matters

This issue also explores pain dismissal from the lived-experience perspective, and contextualises the problem with a feature from the University of Toronto on the structural stigmatisation of chronic pain
