We're delighted to welcome Gavin Davies to the LBF team!

Gavin is a long-time advocate for Strength and Conditioning training, stretching and mobility work, with over a decade of disciplined, consistent personal practice, experimentation and refinement.

His training background sits on 8 years of cycling training in London before relocating to Edinburgh and transitioning to full-time PT.

Gavin builds trust with clients by having the awareness and attention to detail that enables him to meet clients where they’re at, programme the training they need, and pinpoint areas to improve and progress their physicality safely and efficiently.

He designs training programs to improve performance, increase confidence, health and longevity and empower individuals to embrace any other challenging opportunity they face. His approach to general physical preparedness is with the goal of developing capable and durable people.

Gavin has deep knowledge on physicality and a drive to continually improve sees him reading extensively and continually learning through established trainers who prove their process. He has attended training seminars both in the UK and the US.

He is a calmly motivating force and an incredibly supportive, kind and knowledgeable trainer to work with. He understands the connection between body, mind and lifestyle, so training becomes a holistic part of broader self-improvement. Calorie Cycling: the simple but effective strategy we use to prevent weight loss plateaus (and make dieting more enjoyable).

Nutrition can be a confusing topic. Especially when it comes to the topic of weight loss.

But we’re all about simplicity at LBF… and helping our clients make meaningful changes in their nutrition and lifestyle habits.

So let us break it down - as simply as we can - how to cycle your calories for weight loss success.

First, you need to input your data into a calorie calculator to get your calorie targets. There’s plenty online. Or you can use an app like MyFitnessPal.

Note your maintenance calorie target. Note your calorie deficit target.

To lose weight, eat in a calorie deficit. You can do this until you start to feel your body isn’t too happy any more. Common signs are low energy & mood, poor sleep and craving junk food.

This is your body’s way of saying “I don’t like this any more”.

It’s around this time you may also hit a weight loss plateau as your metabolic rate starts to reduce in an attempt to conserve energy.

At this point, start eating at calorie maintenance levels again for a while. And no, you won’t gain weight by doing this (assuming you’re not in a calorie surplus, of course).

The scales may go up a little, especially if you’re consuming more carbohydrate again. But don’t worry about this.

When your energy, mood and sleep return to normal and cravings start to subside? You can move back into a calorie deficit.

And that’s it. Simple in theory, but not always easy to implement…

It’s official, I’m a Certified Biomechanics Specialist 🤓

I’ve done a lot of training and certifications in my 14 years as a PT…

But this biomechanics course with was definitely the most challenging yet rewarding course I’ve done.

Biomechanics is a challenging field of study to grasp and master but is, I believe, one of the most valuable skills any fitness trainer can learn to enhance their skills dramatically.

We’ll be launching a new biomechanics service at the studio soon and are excited to bring this to the Edinburgh (and online) market…
