After receiving a beautiful bouquet of flowers from Bonnie Blooms Florist, I found the perfect place to display them in my home. A place where I could see and enjoy them throughout the day. Each time I passed the bouquet, I stopped to admire, smell and appreciate how they made me feel.
It made me wonder about the benefit a simple bunch of flowers can have on your mental health.
So I reached out to Ellie McCabe, the owner & florist of Bonnie Blooms and asked more about the flowers and their individual benefits.
The benefits of being surrounded by flowers has an enormous impact upon our mental health. During a study conducted at Rutgers University, professors found that the power of receiving or gifting flowers was far more advanced than previously believed.
Across all age groups, there was a long-term effect that the recipient demonstrated through the immediate impact of happiness by receiving the flowers.
There was further evidence of happiness by simply being surrounded by the flowers, participants within the study demonstrated signs of being less stressed, anxious and agitated. It was also reported that by gifting flowers from one individual to another, it increased their connection and bond.
Throughout history flowers have always played a vital role in our health and wellbeing - from the Romans using roses for skin care and the Egyptians using blue lotus for relaxation purposes. But how do flowers play a role in helping someone mentally?
Lavender – an extremely powerful flower that can be used in many ways. This purple flower can be used either fresh or dried and has been proven to help with insomnia, anxiety and racing thoughts. It is known to help calm the nervous system and regulate mood and emotion. Placing a few stems in a warm bath before bed or leaving a small bundle on your pillow throughout the day will help you get a more content and calmer night sleep.
Jasmine – commonly associated with oils and teas but their scent alone is powerful enough to help boost your mental health. Their sweet smell is known to act upon the nervous system and promote relaxation and improvement on mood. The flower blooms beautifully in direct sunlight on a windowsill or in a light and airy environment. Perfect to be placed in a kitchen to help you start your day on a positive note.
Sunflowers – a beautiful reflection of happiness within a flower. The cheery flower symbolises warmth, hope and resilience. It has been noted that simply being in the presence of sunflowers can increase focus and mental clarity. They release neurotransmitters like serotine which can help boost overall happiness. The flower is known to thrive in various environments with the head of the flower moving to find the sun and natural light. The flower is seen to be so powerful that it has been used by many charities and is the symbol for hidden disabilities to signify individuals may need additional support.
Chamomile – a flower that is normally associated with tea and body creams. It is seen to be one of the most fragile of flowers however is deemed to be the most comforting. Often mistaken for a daisy, there are two variations of this flower; Roman chamomile and German chamomile. Roman Chamomile is often used within essential oils and body lotions whereas German Chamomile is used as an ingredient within many herbal teas. Along with helping sleep quality, the flower is also known to help you fall asleep quicker. The scent of the flower has a very mild sedative that can help calm the nervous system and help you feel more relaxed overall. Can also be helpful if you are experiencing signs of burnout, the flower helps the body rest and recharge.
