The Open Door Edinburgh

The Open Door Edinburgh The Open Door Edinburgh provides support to older people, those living with dementia, poor health or mobility and those who care for them.

Our Day Services support people at our community hub in Morningside. “I have a dream …to turn loneliness into fellowship, isolation into recognition …and bridge the gap between church and community”. (Peggy Hunter – founder of the Open Door 1982)

And so began this ecumenical venture that has been a presence in the heart of Morningside, Edinburgh for over 32 years. The Open Door continue to be sup

ported by all our local churches, however since we promote inclusivity, our door truly is open to anyone. Over the years, as services have grown so have the number of staff and volunteers needed to provide them. Currently we have 6 staff and are supported by over 70 volunteers.

May has been such a busy, wonderful month for our clients at The Open Door.

We love seeing how much joy these days bring. Our mornings always start the best way—with a warm cup of tea, a biscuit, and a good old blether. From there, the days are packed with fantastic activities to keep everyone happy and engaged:

Keeping minds active with games and quizzes
Getting creative with crafts and art projects
Staying active with gentle exercise classes
Enjoying music with interactive, live musical sessions
Getting out and about with lovely trips all over Edinburgh!

Add in a delicious hot lunch and plenty of refreshments to finish the day, and it truly is a home away from home.

If you’re a caregiver looking for a supportive, vibrant place for your parent or loved one, please get in touch to see how we can help. ❤️

Mark your diaries, Morningside!

The secret is out! The Big Give is officially returning from Monday 22nd June to Monday 29th June, and we couldn't be more excited.

This is our biggest opportunity of the year to raise vital funds for The Open Door, ensuring our cherished day care services can continue supporting our lovely Clients right here in Morningside.

Here is the magic part: Every single penny you give during this week will be DOUBLED (up to £20k)! Every £10 becomes £20—meaning your generosity goes twice as far to help those who need it most.

We’ve packed the week with some absolutely brilliant community events:

A whole week of our fabulous Pop-Up Café
A creative Painting & Prosecco night
A legendary Bake-Off Competition (time to practice those bakes!)
A deeply relaxing Sound Bath Evening
An inspiring Poetry Night

We will be sharing the full timetable and booking details very soon. For now, pop the dates in your diaries - 22nd–29th, and please give this post a share to help us spread the word. Let’s make this year even better than last!

It was so lovely to welcome Dan, and Cllr Marie-Clair Munro - Morningside ward to our pop up café last week. Amazing the conversations that can take place purely by chance.

We'll be back again in June, and if you're a knitter, sewer, embroiderer, sketcher, natter-er, or local councillor, everyone's welcome 🥰

A STORY OF RESILIENCE AT OPEN DOOR 🧶

The other day I met a wonderful man called Dan Macnee when I visited the The Open Door Edinburgh

When I arrived, Dan was sitting knitting squares by hand. As we got talking, he explained how knitting has helped his mental health and supports parts of the brain that have been damaged. What really struck me was not only his resilience, but his kindness.

Dan doesn’t just knit for himself, he gives the knitted squares away to spread joy to others.

It was a reminder that sometimes the smallest acts can make the biggest difference. Community spaces like Open Door are so important because they give people connection, purpose, friendship, and support.

You never know what someone is carrying, and you never know how much a simple conversation, a welcoming space, or even a knitted square can mean to someone.

Thanks to Dan, for sharing his story and giving me a knitted square 🧶

Our hearts are officially melted! 🥰❤️

We had the most wonderful surprise yesterday when little Molly popped in to see us. At just 9 weeks old, she is an absolute bundle of joy!

Our Tuesday Group fell completely in love with her—and honestly, who could blame them? There is nothing quite like that sweet puppy energy to brighten everyone's day. We think she might just have to become our permanent mascot! 🐾

Hope this brings a smile to your day. 😊 Drop a comment below if you think Molly is just the cutest! 👇

Don’t miss our FREE Power of Attorney event this Monday, 18th May.

We’re delighted that Allingham and Co Solicitors are able to come to The Open Door this Monday afternoon to share their knowledge, expertise and reliable advice about the types of documents that are easy to organise and can help protect your assets and choices. Meet Jonathan, one of our Minibus Drivers.

Jonathan first came to The Open Door as our Fundraiser. But more recently he can be seen zipping around Edinburgh collecting Day Service members from their homes in the morning and driving them safely to The Open Door. In the afternoon he collects them at The Open Door and drive them back to their homes. He also takes great care in assisting any of our Clients who use wheelchairs, or who have other mobility or cognitive issues.

Jonathan loves interacting with the passengers, making them feel comfortable and safe. He says they always have a good blether and more than a few laughs on every trip. He also get great satisfaction in executing tricky manoeuvres in Edinburgh's tight spots.

When he's not working for The Open Door, Jonathan is busy doing security work at venues across Edinburgh like the Usher Hall, Murrayfield Stadium and The Corn Exchange. In his free time he likes to go to the gym and he also revived his childhood Scalextric hobby during COVID.

Jonathan's dream would be to see The Open Door increase the number of elderly and socially isolated people that we're able to help, and, therefore, get to drive an (even) bigger minibus!

Have you seen Jonathan out and about in the bus?
