Today is a time to remember with respect the brave individuals who gave their lives so we could enjoy freedom. We are deeply grateful for their sacrifice and extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has chosen a life of duty to our country.

We will be pausing to take time to honour their service. Our team will be joining people across the nation as we reflect and give thanks, as well as thinking about the meaningful farewells we have arranged for members of our Armed Forces over this past year.

Lest we forget.

We were delighted to attend a recent event for funeral directors, offering the opportunity to explore the impressive new East Lothian Crematorium and Memorial Gardens, situated just north of Old Craighall village near Musselburgh. This modern facility features cutting-edge technology and is the only crematorium in Scotland to provide an immersive and fully customisable funeral experience.

The pictures show Team Porteous and our Managing Director Mark Porteous (Past President of SAIF) greeting current National President of SAIF, Ross Hickton.

Sheila Oxley (nee Humes)
(Livingston Village/Washington Tyne and Wear)
1941 - 2025

It is with sadness that we announce that Sheila Oxley passed away peacefully on 3rd October 2025, at Kirk Lane Nursing Home in Livingston, at the age of 84 years.
She was a beloved wife to the late Edward (Eddie/Ted), a devoted mother to Sharon and Wayne, a cherished mother-in-law to Alison and David, a doting gran to Connor, Casey, Jamie, Sophie and Dominic, as well as a great gran to Carter and Ruby-Rose.

Sheila Humes was born on the 22nd May 1941 in Washington, County Durham. She was the fourth child of James and Elsie Humes and a dear sister to Ronnie, Jean, Jim and Norman, all of whom she held in great affection.
Throughout her career, Sheila served as a caretaker for Livingston Village Community Hall and St Margaret's Academy. In her leisure time, she loved nothing more than looking after her grandkids, pets and playing Skip in her team at West Lothian Indoor and Mid Calder Bowling Clubs, both of which she was a long-standing member.
Everyone who knew her, with her vibrant and positive outlook on life, will remember her as a loving Mum and Gran and as a passionate animal lover.
Her passing will be profoundly felt but her memory will live on.

A Celebration of Sheila's life will be held at Livingston Old Parish Church on Friday October 31 at 12.45pm, followed by a short service at West Lothian Crematorium at 2pm and then a gathering in The Livingston Inn, to which all are invited.
Please feel free to wear a touch of colour as Sheila loved to do.
Family flowers only, but donations, if desired, may be made to Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home in Sheila's memory. For more details and to donate direct, please go to: https://porteousfunerals.com/funeral-details/?tribute=sheilaoxley

Yvonne, Mark and Connor were incredibly impressed with the beautiful facilities, catering and setting. Itโ€™s the perfect venue for post-funeral gatherings and memorial receptions.

This week, our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have seen little lives taken from them far too soon.
Baby Loss Awareness Week is a time to treasure memories and remember these precious babies, to honour and respect the love that will always remain - and to remind grieving families that they are never alone.
At Porteous Family Funeral Directors, we understand that the loss of a baby is something that leaves a permanent mark and we see every day the courage and compassion of families which endure long after their babies are gone.
If you are grieving, please know that youโ€™re never on your own and that itโ€™s good to reach out for support when you need it, whether thatโ€™s through family, friends, support groups, or professionals. We are here, like so many others, so you donโ€™t have to face this alone.
Baby Loss Awareness Week brings hope to many; read more about it here: babyloss-awareness.org/

Yesterday, our managing director Mark Porteous was honoured to attend the Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF) Northern Ireland Regional Meeting at The Dunsilly Hotel in Antrim as part of a special delegation.
Mark joined fellow representatives from SAIF Scotland, Declan Maguire, Gavin Henshelwood and Paul Stevenson, to discuss an exciting and progressive step forward โ€” a merger between SAIF Scotland and the Northern Ireland members of SAIF National.
This alliance seeks to improve efficiency, deepen collaboration, and unify the voice of independent funeral directors across Scotland and Northern Ireland. By bringing together our shared values and resources in this way, we can continue to strengthen our profession and importantly, better support the families we are privileged to serve.

When arranging a funeral, the focus is rightly on creating a meaningful send-off for a loved one. But at Porteous Family Funeral Directors we believe that legacy can extend even further - right into the heart of our Edinburgh community.

Each year, we invest thousands of pounds in local groups and events, helping to nurture the neighbourhoods and institutions that make our city thrive.

This is a hidden benefit of choosing a local, family-run business, and you can read all about it in our latest blog.

The idea of community partnership is at the very heart of what we do at Porteous Family Funeral Directors. We believe in nurturing the vibrant, caring neighbourhoods we serve across Edinburgh.

Thank you to everyone who supported our Kiltwalk endeavours at the weekend. We're pleased to announce that the amount raised now stands at an amazing ยฃ1,223! This takes Ross' total for Prostate Cancer UK to more than ยฃ20,000 and still he's got another six months to go as SAIF independent funeral directors President. He's on course to raise a phenomenal amount for this important charity. Thank you again to all our supporters.
