Reflecting on the recent report published by the Health Service Journal (HSJ), discussions about easing elective targets in the National Health Service (NHS) in England prompt us to ponder the journey we've travelled since the inception of the Referral to Treatment (RTT) targets.

Cast your mind back to 2010, when the promise of ensuring 92% of patients received treatment within 18 weeks of referral was a beacon of hope. The achievements showcased in reports from the Department of Health filled us with pride and enthusiasm. Fast forward to now, and we find ourselves in a different reality, where meeting RTT targets has become increasingly challenging, with the last successful attempt dating back to September 2015.

The numbers tell a story of their own. From a waiting list of around 2.5 million in 2010 to a staggering 7.6 million today, the demand for timely healthcare has surged. Despite claims of a slight decrease in the waiting list, the fact remains that over 98,000 individuals are waiting 65 weeks or more for treatment, with 78-week breaches increasing over the past few months (HSJ).
