RCGP Scotland represents a network of around 5,000 family doctors in Scotland aiming to improve care for patients. We work to encourage and maintain the highest standards of general medical practice and act as the voice of GPs on resources, education, training, research and clinical standards. Since 2013 the College's 'Put patients first: Back general practice' campaign has been calling for 11% of NHS Scotland's budget to be spent on general practice care.

Do you know a GP or primary care team who is quietly (or loudly!) making things greener, smarter, and more sustainable in the North East of Scotland? The North East Scotland Faculty Climate and Sustainability Award is back for 2026, and we would love your nominations!

This award recognises a project or initiative that reduces environmental impact in primary care, whether that’s cutting waste, improving systems, or making changes that help people live more sustainably. It can be an individual or a team, and it does not need to be a huge project. Sometimes the simplest ideas create the biggest ripple effect! 🍃

We’re particularly keen to hear about initiatives like greener prescribing, changes that reduce the carbon footprint of everyday practice, smarter systems that cut waste and projects that support sustainable living.

Nominations can be made here https://office.pulse.ly/m3drgaqcvk and close at midday on Friday 24 April 2026.

Chair Dr Chris Provan has written an article for The Daily Record explaining why we believe walk‑in centres will not provide the widely promised solution to the 8am rush for appointments. In short, walk‑in centres are costly to run, deliver fewer services than core GP practices, risk widening health inequalities, and have already proven unsuccessful in England.

Dr Chris Provan, Chair of the Royal College of GPs in Scotland, has criticised the claims made about the new services.

Walk-in centres deliver a very limited range of services at a greater cost than core general practice. We do not believe the Scottish Government's pilot represents a good use of funding at a time of significant pressures - should the pilot fail, as we expect, then the walk-in centres should be closed, and the funds diverted to where it will make greatest impact for patients: core general practice.

Thanks to BBC Verify for examining the Scottish Government’s pilot of GP led walk-in centres. It is our view - based on evidence from elsewhere - that GP walk-in clinics are unlikely to deliver the promised 1 million appointments and will not significantly reduce pressures on core general practice.
