I didn’t have the time to write about it. Three weeks has already passed since the run day, but better late than never.
I’m not a runner. In fact, this started by a friend who wanted to train for her run last year. I said “I could train, but not sure if I can run half-marathon”. On my 1st training of 5km I left my tongue in the floor. We started training twice a week for 2 months and soon 10km became just a warm-up run. The best part of our training was to share the experience with these 2 amazing girls (Lucia and Bethan). Our friendship grew up with every run, sharing our tips, life plans, jokes, life stories, secrets…we became best friends!..and you can imagine how good it feels when you finish the run and give that “high five of victory”. We ran Crathes half-marathon last year.
This year Lucia and I decided to repeat the experience. With one half-marathon already done, we were experts, right?. I was surprised how Lucia was thinking on getting a better time this time. She got an extraordinary strength and speed that left me far behind in every run. She was now running in a professional level, while me I just wanted to finish with my flag.
Flag of what would you ask?...The flag of dreams, hope, of FREEDOM FOR VENEZUELA. Those 3 colours that represents the hope of many Venezuelans that are suffering under this current terrible crisis.
The flag I used in my run was lent by a friend who bought it during a protest in Venezuela in 2002, just few days before the terrible Oil Company (PDVSA) Strike in Venezuela which marks the beginning of our current crisis. I was surprised to know that actually the flag I carried during my 21km had so much history about ourselves, our history and all that we has passed thought in the last 18 years …I was honoured to carry it on our way for FREEDOM!.
With my flag tied on my back, my bottle of water, a selection of Venezuelan-latin music, my request of “Freedom 4 Venezuela” and my heart full of hope, I started my 21km journey…21km of hope for seeing at the end a Venezuela smiling to the bright and new future with its warm and happy people.
In every km I heard people with different accents saying “let’s go Venezuela” or some Venezuelans “Let’s go for our country”…every word made me run faster and faster. At 14km I found the most precious thing in my life, my family!!!...my 2 year old baby with his surprised faced said “Mummy!!!” and my husband smiling and always supporting me on all my crazy ideas saying “there is a toilet baby”…he knows that I don’t move a finger if there is not a toilet around hahaha…
In the last km, something unexpected happened: I started crying…crying for seeing my country so dark, so sad, so depressed under this whole situation and seeing many young people who have lost their life for fighting for our FREEDOM…
I took a deep breath, put my flag over my head and ran through the finishing line….More than a half-marathon, this was a race for our FREEDOM.
We are becoming more and more, we are getting more support and one day we will find our FREEDOM!!!... Venezuela will shine again…someday…
