In honour of Sharath Jois 11/11/24.

It’s rare our shala we put photos up of gurus/ teachers on pedestals or walls anymore but for 1 day Sharath’s photo sits on our shalas puja table.

In Hindu tradition 1yr after death, there is special ceremony called Shraddha or Barsy that provides spiritual support for the soul’s journey. To honour. To remember. To give gratitude for all they have done for us/ our communities.

Today, Emma at the opening invocation offered a small reflection of offering the chant to him, to our communities and teachers how have supported us in our yogic journeys so far.

Sharing the Opening and Closing Ashtanga Invocation in Sign Language by our student Manako Yabe, who has been a dedicated member of our Mysore program and community for several years.

Manako generously shared this resource with us with the intention of making it accessible to our wider community after working with our broader Mysore Team. Read more about the project in our bio link…

This week we were re-reminded as a community our work is never done in managing power dynamics, abuse and misconduct. That the student and teacher relationship is deeply sacred. The community is deeply important it was very painful to learn about more abuse and misuse of power. We are deeply sorry to those who were/ are affected by Taylor Hunt’s abuses.

This statement is a wider, more general statement from a large collection of teachers who have worked to come together to make this bigger statement.

If you would like to watch the informal discussion we as a community had on Friday during our post-led pranayama/ chanting there is a video on YouTube linked in our bio. Please note it’s not perfect and totally unedited.

AYE next actions:

- Our shala will have a full, detailed code of conduct and complaints procedure available on our website and in-house within the next few weeks. This will be a collaborative, so if you would like to comment on a draft, you will be invited too.

- All of our main teachers have completed extensive Trauma-Informed training (50+ hours) with Edinburgh Community Yoga. Our newer teachers & Mysore assistants will be financially supported to do so in the coming years as they develop their Mysore teaching skills. This is a commitment AYE has set aside money and energy for.
