Pain doesn’t always shout. Sometimes it whispers.
It shows up in the small things first.
• A subtle change in gait
• A shift in posture
• A dip in performance
• A change in behaviour
• A difference in everyday activities
These are the 5 principles of pain we look at within Canine Massage Guild.
Because pain isn’t just about limping.
It’s about patterns. Compensation. Micro-changes that build over time.
Dogs are incredibly good at coping.
Which means it’s our job to be incredibly good at noticing.

Pain doesn’t present the same way in every dog;
An orthopaedic issue won’t look the same as soft tissue restriction. A puppy won’t present like a senior.

Each day this week, we’ll look at these 5 principles through a different focus:
• Orthopaedic
• Soft tissue
• Puppy
• Adult
• Senior
• Anxiety
Same framework. Different perspective.
The goal?
To help you see the small changes before they become big ones. Small observations. Big impact.

Come along to Harbro Country Stores tomorrow and get a free muscular health check for your dog!
‘What is a muscular health check?’ I hear you say… 🤔Let me tell you!
My hands are trained in the art of palpation. I will have a feel of the dog’s main muscles from head to toe to see what I can find. I am looking for changes in tone, texture and imbalances, this gives me an indication of areas in your dogs body that may need a bit of TLC and attention.
So come along it’s completely free and no obligations, just a bit of friendly chat and who knows you might even learn something!

🐾So you have noticed your senior dog has started to slow down, so what now?🤷🏼‍♀️

First off, I think it’s great when dog guardians notice these things as it shows how well they know their dog.
It is now time to take action. Don’t delay and ‘keep an eye on it’. The quicker a problem is addressed the better off the dog will be in the long run as it has less time to build up. Trust me. 🧐

All too often I hear people say ‘my dog is just getting old so they are starting to slow down’. I am here to tell you that is a sign something needs investigated, it’s time to check for the cause of them slowing down. Maybe they are showing the early signs of an orthopaedic condition like arthritis or spondylosis or there could be something more serious underlying.
It’s important to get the dog checked over by a vet to know what is to be dealt with. Once there is a bit more clarity it’s easier to know what the next steps are towards your dog’s comfort. It might even be time to get in touch with a soft tissue specialist like myself! 👋🏻

Join me over the next couple of days for my mini serious on winter care for senior dogs, where I will talk about things to watch out for and steps you can take to help them through this challenging time of year.☃️

Winter hits us all hard and it can be especially tough for the dogs in their golden years. First thing to note is a dog’s breed and size influences the age at which they are classed as senior:
❄️Small: 8-12 years old
❄️Medium: 7-10 years old
❄️Large: 6-8 years old
❄️Giant: 5-6 years old
Maybe your dog is classed as senior and you have only@just realised reading this post!

As it gets cold and wet watch out for these more subtle indicators of pain and discomfort:
❄️Reluctance to go on walks/ hiding
❄️Keeping to themselves
❄️’getting old’ or slowing down
❄️Less willing to be touched
❄️Difficulty getting in/out the car or on/off sofa
❄️Getting ‘grumpy’/reactive/barking more

This is their way of letting their guardians know they need assistance, they are communicating they are in pain/discomfort. Do not ignore them!

Give this post a like if you have noticed any of these signs in your dog or someone else’s dog. 👵🏼👴🏻

‼️FREE EVENT‼️

Bring your dog along to visit Caledonian Canine Massage and myself at Harbro Country Stores for a free muscular health check!

What is a muscular health check I hear you ask?🤨

A muscular health check is a head-to-toe assessment of your dog’s main muscle groups. We are looking for things such as areas of overcompensation, myofascial pain, trigger points and strains.
This allows us to give owners a picture of what could be going on in their dog’s soft tissue in terms of areas of injury and/or dysfunction and from there we can provide advice on what they can do with that information going forward.

So if you would like to learn about your dogs muscular health pop in and have a chat!
