Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) The Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) was formed in 1993. Since 1 April 2011 SIGN has been part of Healthcare Improvement Scotland.

Our objective is to improve the quality of health care for patients in Scotland by reducing variation in practice and outcome, through the development and dissemination of national The membership of SIGN includes all the medical specialties, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, professions allied to medicine, patients, health service managers, social services, and researchers. The work of SIGN is supported by an Executive based at Elliott House, Hillside Crescent in Edinburgh.

Share your views on our guideline on the management of chronic pain.

Part 1 of the SIGN guideline on Management of chronic pain was published in December 2025. Part 2 of the SIGN guideline on Management of chronic pain is now open for consultation. This part includes recommendations and guideline content on:
• simple analgesics
• antiepileptics
• muscle relaxants
• topical analgesia
• combination pharmacological therapies
• physical therapies (hands-off)
• physical therapies (hands-on)
• electrotherapy
• dietary interventions, and
• alternative therapies
in people with chronic pain.

We are primarily interested in your view on the comprehensiveness and accuracy of the interpretation of the evidence base supporting the guideline recommendations, and any comments on the style or presentation would also be welcome.
