For the past 5 years we have been able to provide home blood pressure monitoring services to maternity patients within NHS Lothian, which has been found to be beneficial for both patients and the service. However, we are currently facing shortages with our BP monitor supply which is impacting patient care.

If you have been a previous patient who has benefited from this service, we would appreciate if you could take the time to check if you are still in possession of one of these monitors and return it to the Obstetric Triage and Assessment at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

Did you know you can get online breastfeeding support in Scotland?

🔵 Virtual Tuesdays (Tomorrow 10th February) 🤱💜💚
🔵 Every Tuesday, The Breastfeeding Network offers an Online Breastfeeding Support group, which is for anyone in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🤱
🔵 Offering mums online 1:1 or group support where ever they may be
🔵 Sessions are free - use the link below to receive your log in details:
https://www.eventbrite.com/o/58624689183 (or you can find the link in the Midlothian Linktree)
🔵 Booking closes at 5pm on the day of the group - please book before then.
🔵 Our peer supporters are mums who have breastfed their own children and gifted their time to train with Breastfeeding Network to support others (support can be offered via private break out rooms if needed)
🔵 Virtual sessions are a great alternative or additional way to attend groups from a location of choice.
🔵 We have enjoyed meeting mums for near and far, chatting around the trials of getting to groups, returning to work, siblings, breastfeeding and weaning, baby poo... and all things mum 🤣 hair…. Endless washing….cost of living…. Favourite foods…..music….sleep (or lack of) 💤💤
🔵 Very occasionally we may have to roll all support into one group - these sessions are run by our volunteers, and sometimes we just dont have enough volunteers for the sessions to run as 1:1 as well as a group setting. We do our very best 💜💚

Have you recently had your baby or are due soon? Did you know you can opt in to have 1:1 phone support from one of our trained peer supporters? This is part of our Bump Buddy project but you can choose to have this even if you haven't managed to attend one of our sessions?

If you end up delivering your baby earlier than planned, or perhaps the dates of the sessions don't work, you can still sign up to receive 1:1 phone support for when your baby arrives.

Mums who have received the support so far have said some lovely things about the service and found it more helpful than perhaps you'd imagine.

You can sign up here: https://forms.office.com/e/6ex9WgXcVP or send us a message and we can get you set up.

Urgent reminder 🚨

Today, BBC Morning Live featured a segment about private scan clinics.

After interviewing 2 mums with negative experiences of private scan clinics, the presenter said pregnant women could check their baby’s heartbeat themselves with a stethoscope for reassurance. This advice is not only wrong, but dangerous because you could be falsely reassured.

No home scanning device, doppler or app can tell you if your baby is well. While it may sound tempting, it's not a safe way to listen to your baby’s heartbeat or check they're okay. This can only be done by a midwife or health professional.

Unless you're professionally trained, it's easy to confuse what you're hearing or seeing and be falsely reassured.

If you're worried about reduction in baby's movements, or have any other concerns, contact your maternity unit immediately.

Today’s theme is and this one was very tricky indeed.

We’ve opted for this Santa riding through a hospital on his sleigh, dressed in his finest Father Christmas gear. I’m afraid we don’t actually know which hospital this photograph belongs to but it looks like they knew how to do Christmas right 🎅
