Why Are We Asking for Your Views?
NHS Lothian currently allows partners and key supporters to stay overnight on antenatal and postnatal wards, reflecting our commitment to family-centred care. This has been highlighted as an area of good practice following a Healthcare Improvement Scotland unannounced visit in June 2025, and is in line with national policy (Best Start), which encourages flexible, family-centred care while promoting safe and respectful environments.

We want to understand how current arrangements are working for staff, women and partners in NHS Lothian, and how we can best support family-centred care while ensuring everyone has the privacy and rest they need. Some maternity staff and patients have raised concerns about how overnight stays are working in shared ward bays. For context, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde recently reviewed their approach following feedback, and overnight stays there are now generally limited to single rooms agreed on the basis of clinical or support needs.

This review relates only to the antenatal and postnatal period. Partners will be able stay at all times during labour and birth.

Please click next to complete this anonymous survey giving us your views on overnight stays for partners. It should take around 10 minutes.

Thank you for taking the time to share your views.
