Janet's family decided to add a Mallard engine on to her order of service and condolence book as a way for her late husband to be included in the service as he was a train driver 🚂

Wildflower seeds and a mixture of pins were also attached to the order of services for loved ones to take home as a keepsake

Thank you to Samantha from Mexborough Funeralcare for organising such a special tribute 💙

End of life care is incredibly tough, especially for young carers. This we’re thinking of young carers who support others through the hardest times. These small soothing things are here to offer a little comfort when it’s needed most ⬇️

Something Soft 🧸
- A hoodie that still smells like them or a teddy to keep you grounded.

A Soundtrack for Stillness 🎶
- For when you need a moment to pause or catch your breath.

A Tiny Escape 📚
- A favourite book or game. Just a few minutes away can help you come back stronger.

A Scent That Grounds You 🕯️
- Their shampoo, a candle or essential oil. Let a familiar smell calm your body and mind.

If you’re a young carer or know one, we’d love to know what helped you or what you’d recommend to others. Your voice matters 💙

Spend a minute meeting the team- Sean

What's your job role and how does your day look?

I am the Care Logistics Lead for Edinburgh and East Lothian and my day is often manic. I schedule funerals and arrange for loved ones to be brought into our care and then taken to the funeral home before the funeral. I organise the scheduling of cars and drivers for the funerals we do.

How has your career at Co-op Funeralcare looked?
I started in November 2018 as Night Ambulance. I did this for around 3 years before going to Day Ambulance for around 6 months. I then got the opportunity to move into management where I was Care Logistics Lead (and Interim Care Logistics Manager) up until now.

What is your 1 funeral wish?
I want everything Green. The coffin, the flowers, the ties worn by staff. Just Green!

What's the 1 thing we offer that you love?
Everything- there is always a way to make things happen and for families to get what they need to have the perfect send off. I love that about us.

Spend a minute meeting the team- Stuart

What is your job role and how does your day look?
I’m the Funeral Service Manager for Edinburgh so I manage the team of Edinburgh Funeral Arrangers and Funeral Directors. My day consists of visiting our offices to support the team to deliver the best service. Occasionally I will help out on funerals and bringing loved ones into our care. Like all roles we have here, it’s always a team effort!

What has your career at Co-op Funeralcare looked like?
I started here in 2018 as Night Ambulance and then moved into the Logistics office to schedule funerals with the drivers and cars. This was also arranging bringing loved ones into our care and ensuring everybody was where they needed to be. Then the opportunity to progress into the Funeral Service Manager role came and I took it and 2 years on I’m still doing it and still enjoying it.

What’s your 1 funeral wish?
I want the song ‘High’ by Feeder to be played at reflection.

What's 1 thing we offer that you love?
The level of care and attention we provide to every client. Our team do a great job at putting their personalities into the arranging and conducting of funerals which makes it a welcoming and caring experience.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer is the most common Cancer in the UK with 1 woman being diagnosed every 10 minutes. With this being said, over half of women do not check their breasts regularly. Checking for lumps is one of the most effective ways to catch Breast Cancer.

Breast Cancer doesn't just affect women but also men too, albeit a much smaller number.

During Breast Cancer awareness month, we're asking you to check your breasts and tell those around you to do the same. Look out for symptoms and if there is anything unusual, speak to your GP right away.

Spend a minute meeting the team - Peter

What's your job role and how does your day look?
I am Ceremonial Crew and my job is to drive our Limo’s and Hearses on funerals. I can be at a few funeral services a day. My day takes me across Edinburgh & East Lothian meeting lovely families and working with our different Funeral Directors.

How has your career at Co-op Funeralcare looked?
I started in January 2023 on a part time basis having recently retired. I’m still part time now and it works for me around my hobbies.

What is your 1 funeral wish?
I'd like my ashes scattered at sea, please!

What's 1 thing we offer that you love?
The use of electric vehicles and our effort to become more sustainable.

Spend a minute meeting the team - Norrie

What’s your job role and how does your day look?
I’m a funeral arranger and I’m based in the Niddrie office where I am here to help arrange funerals. I’ll take you through the whole arrangement from start to finish. Alongside this it’s general running of the office and looking after loved ones ahead of families coming to visit.

How has your career at Co-op Funeralcare looked?
I’ve worked for Co-op Funeralcare since the end of August but I’ve been in the industry for about 2 years so I’ve seen a fair bit.

What is your 1 funeral wish?
It's the same as everyone else’s and that is that nothing goes wrong!

What’s 1 thing we offer that you love?
How we always got out our way to fulfil the families wishes for a fitting send off.

Spend a minute meeting the team - Clair
What is your job role and how does your day look?
I am the Funeral Director based between our Niddrie Office and McKenzie & Millar Piershill office. My day can vary as I can be conducting funerals for any of these offices as well as our others in Edinburgh and East Lothian. I might start the day at a Cemetery, be at a Crematorium in the afternoon and then be bringing peoples loved ones into our care in the evenings. Every day is different!

How has your career at Co-op Funeralcare looked?
I started as a funeral arranger in 2018 when I was 21 and I spent 3 years doing that and then around 3 years ago I became a Funeral Director.

What is your 1 funeral wish?
I have probably a few because I see a lot but probably a piper playing Highland Cathedral as the cortege arrived at the Crematorium as that gives me goosebumps every time.

What is your favourite thing we offer?
I love the option of memorial jewellery for ashes as I have a ring with a loved ones ashes. I also like the Crystal Tea Light Ashes Holder as a subtle way to have ashes in the home.
