Pilates Prop Survey

30 questionnaires were issued to my class members.
They were asked to rate their preferences and the effectiveness for using 8 different props we regularly use in our Pilates sessions. They were also asked to identify their exercise focus and goals. Note the correlation between prop preference, exercise focus and goals.
From the results it is clear members value the importance of core strength and strength training.
Strength has an impact on both 'balance' and 'posture'. We now recognise the importance of maintaining muscle strength and muscle mass as part of aging well.
However both mobility and flexibility are also key aspects, helping one to perform everyday activities of daily life as we get older.

I now aim to use the results of this survey to inform my teaching and practice.

The Future of bone health and DEXA v REMS!

Many of us have had dexa scans to assess our bone density obtaining a T score. A REMS scan assesses the strength/ fragility of your bone quality. It utilises high frequency sound waves to create detailed images of bone structure ( micro architecture of the spongy trabecular bone) focusing on the spine and hip, critical areas for diagnosing osteoporosis.
In determining fracture risk, bone strength is critical. The REMS combines both bone density and fragility and gives you a risk of fracture in the next 5 years.

REMS is safe, non invasive and the technology is portable so you can have this done in sited locations within the uk.
I was fortunate to have this done by a consultant orthopaedic surgeon in Edinburgh but it is expensive and there is a waiting list.
I felt reassured afterwards as gaining knowledge is gaining peace of mind. Bone fragility and strength is more important than bone density.
As this new technology evolves it will become more widely used to diagnose osteoporosis and evaluate bone health.

Keep stronger for longer !

Marjorie my dad’s partner is 100 years young this year on the 29th April . Last January (2024) she fell outside in her garden and fractured her hip. Although she has altered function in that she now uses a walking frame to move around- as you can see , she can still touch her toes !!👏

Lifting weights keeps us strong and helps to preserve muscle mass. This enables us to carry out daily activities with ease.
For bone building your weights need to be heavy enough so you feel challenged .
For building bones in your arms and shoulders you need to stress the bones so muscles are pulling on bones.
To strengthen hips consider squats and lunges.
