I've been seeing loads of "my therapist told me..." types of posts and they're wrong.

Your therapist should not be "telling you" anything. A therapist is there to provide structure for you so you can come to your own decisions.

It's not an easy process, because emotions and feelings kick in a lot quicker than objectivity and rationale. A therapist's job is to help you work through the feelings and allow you to find your solution.

Why? Because your feelings may be misguided from past patterns or anxiety-ridden about the future. So it's not the right place from which to make decisions.

So, do not use a therapist as an excuse, like they've permitted you to do something. Ignore these kinds of posts and stop sharing them.

As a therapist, I don't have the answers to your life questions. Nor would I want to – I'll never know you well enough for that.

What I do have are the skills to help you regain objective control and come from a place of integrity and confidence so that you are motivated to make the right decisions for you.

Otherwise, you may as well ask the next person you meet on the street what you should do!
