Each year, the Hospice relies on income received from legacies to continue to provide services free of charge to people across Edinburgh and the Lothian's, with life-limiting illnesses. In the last year alone, the care of 1 in 4 of our patients was covered by gifts in Wills.

Help us to continue being there for individuals and their families when they need us most. Find out more about writing a will for the first time, or updating an existing will, by visiting our website https://stcolumbashospice.org.uk/donate/will-power.

For a second year, we're proud to stand with over 125 hospices across across England, Scotland, and Wales, for the "This is Hospice Care" campaign, brought together by Hospice UK.

Hospice care is more than you think, and it's closer than you know. Somewhere in your life, in your family, your friendships, your community - hospice care is already making a difference in ways you might not expect.

But just as the ways we help people grow every year, the need also grows.

We’re able to support one in four people we care for because someone - a stranger, a neighbour, someone who never even used our services - decided hospice care mattered enough to protect. Someone you'll never meet made sure we could be here for your community. Now we're asking you to be that someone for the next generation.

Together, we can make sure that hospice care lives on for all, for now, forever.

As part of Student Volunteering Week, we've been speaking to our young volunteers to find out what brought them to the Hospice, what they expected, or hoped to find here, and what impact their volunteering has made on them.

Here's what Alice, 17, had to say!

"As an aspiring med student I completed two days of work experience across different roles at the Hospice to gain an insight into the vital role St Columba’s Hospice care plays in our community. My time with the hospitality staff was very enjoyable and rewarding, so when they let us know about the volunteer schemes I was eager to join. The staff at the hospice were and are very welcoming, and helpful so if you have any spare time to volunteer I’d highly recommend it.

Being able to volunteer at the Hospice is a very rewarding experience, although it can be sad at times, it’s amazing to be able to contribute to those in our community requiring hospice care.

When I volunteer I normally come in with my friend and we always have a nice time with Angela.

I’ve learnt and gained a lot from volunteering at the Hospice. Kindness, empathy, respect, the importance of giving back when you can, and that the Hospice isn’t a scary place. "

Today is the first day of Student Volunteering Week, and we're delighted to share some insight from one of our youngest Compassionate Neighbours, Freya, who is based in East Lothian. She told us about her experience volunteering, and how it has made a difference to her.

“My name is Freya and I am volunteering as a Compassionate Neighbour for St Columba’s Hospice Care. I decided to put my name forward when I saw an advert on my local town’s social media page. I contacted Maggie and met with her to better understand and discuss the role. The Compassionate Neighbour programme appealed to me as I have seen first hand the impact that kindness, presence and compassion can make to someone facing end of life. A close family member was supported by hospice staff while dying at home they took time to listen and sit with them and their thoughtfulness and kindness made a huge difference.

I hope to study medicine in the future and believe this role reflects the core values of patient centred care- empathy, communication and human connection. If I can help someone feel less isolated and valued during the most vulnerable time of their lives then that is definitely a worthwhile cause.”
