As part of Student Volunteering Week, we've been speaking to our young volunteers to find out what brought them to the Hospice, what they expected, or hoped to find here, and what impact their volunteering has made on them.
Here's what Alice, 17, had to say!
"As an aspiring med student I completed two days of work experience across different roles at the Hospice to gain an insight into the vital role St Columba’s Hospice care plays in our community. My time with the hospitality staff was very enjoyable and rewarding, so when they let us know about the volunteer schemes I was eager to join. The staff at the hospice were and are very welcoming, and helpful so if you have any spare time to volunteer I’d highly recommend it.
Being able to volunteer at the Hospice is a very rewarding experience, although it can be sad at times, it’s amazing to be able to contribute to those in our community requiring hospice care.
When I volunteer I normally come in with my friend and we always have a nice time with Angela.
I’ve learnt and gained a lot from volunteering at the Hospice. Kindness, empathy, respect, the importance of giving back when you can, and that the Hospice isn’t a scary place. "
