Short term respite care while on holiday

Travelling abroad always requires a huge amount of forward planning. When travelling with a loved one who needs additional support, there is even more to consider. When Richard and his wife Eleanor, who has MS, were visiting the UK on holiday from Australia, they knew they needed to find short term respite care. At home, Eleanor has daily, in-home, carers to support her and Richard was keen to find a company to offer the same level of expert care during their trip.

What a gorgeous day for a trip to Nymans, a National Trust house and gardens in West Sussex!

Our carer Alex accompanied Graham for a lovely day out exploring the garden and enjoying a delicious lunch. Graham was able to tell Alex all about the history of the estate and the Messel family who lived there. They also took some time reminiscing on the times he had brought his wife Margaret to the estate to enjoy the beautiful flowers.

Signs of decline - how to suggest care to an elderly loved one

Starting a conversation about care with an elderly loved one is never easy and many families worry about how they will react. At Bright Care, we always recommend beginning the conversation early. Take time to prepare; think of examples of where you see them struggling and consider things from their perspective. When it comes to having successful conversations about care, be open and honest and plan support together.

This is our Care Assistant Debbie, who recently enabled a Grandmother to attend her Grandson's wedding. We knew this was a hugely important day for all the family and were are delighted to support them.

The family wanted someone who could help their Grandmother get ready for the wedding, take her there and provide any assistance she needed during the day. When she got tired, Debbie was able to take her home and get her settled.

Having Debbie on hand meant that Grandmother didn't miss a thing and was able to enjoy the wedding. Knowing that Grandmother was in safe hands gave the family peace of mind and enabled them to focus on the celebration.

Some of our staff recently attended the funeral of a very dear client, Lou Bird.

Lou lived to 101 and was a celebrated war veteran. The service was a lovely tribute to him, with veterans carrying flags and escorting him into the chapel. There were also pipers and the last post was played on the bugle.

Lou was a great character and our Carers really enjoyed their visits with him. They often went to the local park and down to the harbour and enjoyed a good laugh together. He is going to be sorely missed and our love and best wishes are with his family.

Arranging respite care

Caring for a loved one can be extremely rewarding but there may come a time where you need the chance to rest, recharge or do things that aren’t possible alongside your caring responsibilities. We spoke to two families and their Care Managers about their experience of arranging respite care. Find out more on our blog: www.brightcare.co.uk/advice/arranging-respite-care/.

At Bright Care, we think it's really important to thank our carers for the hard work they do for all our lovely clients. Bright Care Edinburgh had a social evening for all their carers last week. They enjoyed a few games of bingo and some yummy pizza. Well done to all the prize winners!
