Kicking off September's book reviews with Bad Drunk by Millie Mackintosh 🍷⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This memoir is raw, honest and surprisingly uplifting read which explores drinking culture, self-worth and what it means to find peace in yourself. I especially liked that Millie includes a Doctor’s expert opinion on alcohol, which added depth and context to her personal story.

As a mental health Dietitian, I’m often asked by sober-curious clients about alcohol, it's effects on their bodies and how to reduce it, so this felt like a really relevant and relatable read.

Millie’s openness makes it feel like a chat with a friend, while also shining a light on an important conversation.

If you’ve ever reflected on your relationship with alcohol or considered cutting back, this book is a must-read.

What I’ve been cooking up this week:

1. Blueberry scones 🫐
2. Slow cooker bean chilli (where would I be without my slow cooker?) 🌶️
3. Rhubarb compote: I'm making the most of the last of the season’s rhubarb (rich in vitamins K + C!) 🍓
4. Avocado & banana smoothie (don’t knock it until you try it!) + chia seed pudding 🥑🍌
5. Tea brack: if you’re Irish, you’ll know! ☘️
6. Pesto & broccoli pasta: a great way to get more iron into your diet 🌿🥦

📚 August Book Review: Let Them by Mel Robbins ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

'Let Them' offers a powerful reminder: we can’t control others’ choices, only how we respond.

This simple yet profound approach can be especially helpful in recovery, where boundaries, self-compassion and acceptance are essential.

By shifting focus from “fixing” others to caring for ourselves, Robbins invites us to conserve emotional energy for what truly matters; our own healing, growth and wellbeing.

While the core message is concise, its applications can be transformative when integrated into daily life and therapeutic practice.

I would highly recommended for anyone working on boundaries and self-care!

💭 ‘Food noise’ refers to the persistent, intrusive thoughts about food such as what you’ve eaten, what you “should” eat or what you’ll eat next.

For those with disordered eating, this isn’t simply about hunger. It can also be a result of:

✨Physical restriction: when the body isn’t getting enough energy, the brain increases food thoughts to drive you to eat.

✨Psychological restriction: even when food is available, rigid rules and fear foods keep the brain on high alert.

✨Habitual over-monitoring: years of tracking, weighing, or planning food can make the thought patterns automatic.

As an eating disorder Dietitian, I see how draining this mental chatter can be.
Recovery is about nourishing your body consistently and reducing the rules that keep your brain stuck in this loop. Over time, food becomes just one part of life, not the constant background noise.

You are not “broken” for experiencing food noise. It’s a sign that your body and brain are asking for care and consistency.

As promised, here’s my go-to pancake recipe, perfect for a relaxed Sunday brunch!

Ingredients 🥞

200g self-raising flour
200ml milk (or your favourite milk alternative)
3 eggs
1.5 tsp baking powder

Method 👩‍🍳

1. Add all the ingredients into a blender or mixing bowl and blend until smooth — the batter should be thick, similar to cake mix.
2. Heat a little butter in a frying pan over medium heat. Pour in small rounds of batter (for American-style pancakes) or larger ones if you prefer.
3. Cook each side for 1–2 minutes until golden brown.
Tip: Flip the pancakes when you see small bubbles forming on the surface.
4. Serve with your favourite toppings!
I used banana (a great source of potassium), kiwi (packed with vitamin C), a dollop of yogurt which is high in protein and calcium and maple syrup which contains phenolic compounds (found in 100% maple syrup).
5. Enjoy!

Note: all my recipes on here are gluten free (as I'm a coeliac) but can be made with regular self-raising flour too.
