Kicking off September's book reviews with Bad Drunk by Millie Mackintosh ๐Ÿทโญโญโญโญโญ

This memoir is raw, honest and surprisingly uplifting read which explores drinking culture, self-worth and what it means to find peace in yourself. I especially liked that Millie includes a Doctorโ€™s expert opinion on alcohol, which added depth and context to her personal story.

As a mental health Dietitian, Iโ€™m often asked by sober-curious clients about alcohol, it's effects on their bodies and how to reduce it, so this felt like a really relevant and relatable read.

Millieโ€™s openness makes it feel like a chat with a friend, while also shining a light on an important conversation.

If youโ€™ve ever reflected on your relationship with alcohol or considered cutting back, this book is a must-read.

What Iโ€™ve been cooking up this week:

1. Blueberry scones ๐Ÿซ
2. Slow cooker bean chilli (where would I be without my slow cooker?) ๐ŸŒถ๏ธ
3. Rhubarb compote: I'm making the most of the last of the seasonโ€™s rhubarb (rich in vitamins K + C!) ๐Ÿ“
4. Avocado & banana smoothie (donโ€™t knock it until you try it!) + chia seed pudding ๐Ÿฅ‘๐ŸŒ
5. Tea brack: if youโ€™re Irish, youโ€™ll know! โ˜˜๏ธ
6. Pesto & broccoli pasta: a great way to get more iron into your diet ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿฅฆ

๐Ÿ“š August Book Review: Let Them by Mel Robbins โญโญโญโญโญ

'Let Them' offers a powerful reminder: we canโ€™t control othersโ€™ choices, only how we respond.

This simple yet profound approach can be especially helpful in recovery, where boundaries, self-compassion and acceptance are essential.

By shifting focus from โ€œfixingโ€ others to caring for ourselves, Robbins invites us to conserve emotional energy for what truly matters; our own healing, growth and wellbeing.

While the core message is concise, its applications can be transformative when integrated into daily life and therapeutic practice.

I would highly recommended for anyone working on boundaries and self-care!

๐Ÿ’ญ โ€˜Food noiseโ€™ refers to the persistent, intrusive thoughts about food such as what youโ€™ve eaten, what you โ€œshouldโ€ eat or what youโ€™ll eat next.

For those with disordered eating, this isnโ€™t simply about hunger. It can also be a result of:

โœจPhysical restriction: when the body isnโ€™t getting enough energy, the brain increases food thoughts to drive you to eat.

โœจPsychological restriction: even when food is available, rigid rules and fear foods keep the brain on high alert.

โœจHabitual over-monitoring: years of tracking, weighing, or planning food can make the thought patterns automatic.

As an eating disorder Dietitian, I see how draining this mental chatter can be.
Recovery is about nourishing your body consistently and reducing the rules that keep your brain stuck in this loop. Over time, food becomes just one part of life, not the constant background noise.

You are not โ€œbrokenโ€ for experiencing food noise. Itโ€™s a sign that your body and brain are asking for care and consistency.

As promised, hereโ€™s my go-to pancake recipe, perfect for a relaxed Sunday brunch!

Ingredients ๐Ÿฅž

200g self-raising flour
200ml milk (or your favourite milk alternative)
3 eggs
1.5 tsp baking powder

Method ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿณ

1. Add all the ingredients into a blender or mixing bowl and blend until smooth โ€” the batter should be thick, similar to cake mix.
2. Heat a little butter in a frying pan over medium heat. Pour in small rounds of batter (for American-style pancakes) or larger ones if you prefer.
3. Cook each side for 1โ€“2 minutes until golden brown.
Tip: Flip the pancakes when you see small bubbles forming on the surface.
4. Serve with your favourite toppings!
I used banana (a great source of potassium), kiwi (packed with vitamin C), a dollop of yogurt which is high in protein and calcium and maple syrup which contains phenolic compounds (found in 100% maple syrup).
5. Enjoy!

Note: all my recipes on here are gluten free (as I'm a coeliac) but can be made with regular self-raising flour too.

โœจ Your happiness isnโ€™t a luxury, itโ€™s essential. Taking care of you isnโ€™t selfish, itโ€™s necessary โœจ

We canโ€™t pour from an empty cup. Prioritising your wellbeing, your rest and your peace is what keeps you grounded, resilient and connected to yourself.

Self-care is a mental health practice. Itโ€™s little habits such as:

๐Ÿง  Saying no when you need to
โ˜€๏ธ Getting fresh air
๐Ÿ“ฑ Unplugging from negativity
๐Ÿ’ฌ Reaching out for support

Today, choose one small thing for your mind and your happiness, because you matter and your care is a priority ๐ŸŒฟ

Summer can be tricky when youโ€™re navigating an eating disorder, with different routines, travel and social events.

Here are 3 tips Iโ€™ve been discussing with my clients that could help you or someone you know! ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธโœจ

1๏ธโƒฃ๐—ฃ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—ฎ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ
Airport food can be unpredictable. Bring safe, familiar snacks in your hand luggage to help manage delays, flight times and long queues. If you know youโ€™ll be out or eating somewhere new, check menus in advance or bring food options youโ€™re comfortable with.

A consistent eating pattern keeps your energy, mood and blood sugars steady. Even if timings shift, aim for your usual meals and snack windows.

It might feel overwhelming at times, but remember holidays are about so much more than whatโ€™s on your plate. Itโ€™s about the people youโ€™re with, new experiences and most importantly, enjoying yourself! ๐ŸŒž
