What is Reiki?
The name Reiki, which is pronounced 'Ray-key', comes from the Japanese words 'rei' meaning spirit, and 'ki' meaning energy.
Reiki is an oriental method of working with energy. In its original Japanese form in the 1900s Reiki is a treatment technique –a sort of oriental spiritual healing, a hands-on treatment method that involves channelling energy. Reiki is now being classed as a sort of complementary therapy, so people might practise Reflexology, or Aromatherapy, or they might practise Reiki.
It is most well known as a hands on, holistic energy healing system that is gentle and non-invasive and yet yields powerful results for the body, mind and spirit.
Reiki is not a religion and neither does one have to believe in Reiki to experience its capabilities. It always goes to the deepest source of the problem and always supports a path towards balance and harmony. Reiki is a suitable treatment for everyone, no matter what their age. It is usually translated as 'universal life energy.'
Where does Reiki originate?
Reiki was developed by a man called Mikao Usui in the early 1900s in Japan. Usui was a learned man with a vast knowledge in a variety of subjects. These included Chinese and Western medicine, psychology and the theology of religions around the world. He was also an expert in many of the Japanese martial arts including Samurai Swordmanship. Usui taught and practiced Spiritual teachings based on Tendai Buddhism (a form of mystical Buddhism) and Shintoism (methods of controlling and working with the energies). He became very well known for his healing abilities and it was from this and his teachings that he referred to as a 'Method to Achieve Personal Perfection' that the name Reiki eventually came.
Today as back then people use Reiki for self-healing, for spiritual or self-development. Reiki practitioners carry out meditations, treat themselves and follow a set of simple, spiritual principles called the Reiki 'precepts'.
What can Reiki do?
Reiki can produce quite startling changes on the mental, emotional and physical levels when used as a treatment method. In fact, over the years Reiki seems to have dealt successfully with a huge range of problems and disorders, in my experience of treating a whole range of conditions, Reiki seems to produce fast and long-lasting results in almost all cases of:
Stress, tension, anxiety and related symptoms
Sleeplessness
Emotional turmoil and discord
Feeling unable to cope
Low spirits and depression
Sports injuries
Long term pain, e.g. back pain
Rheumatism, arthritis, sciatica, scoliosis
Low energy levels
M.E.
Anyone can benefit from a course of Reiki treatments, no matter what your state of health or your age or beneficial changes can take place over a fairly short space of time. Reiki is much more than a stress-reduction method
Reiki can produce:
Deep relaxation
Reduced stress & anxiety
Boosted energy levels
A feeling of inner calm, contentment and serenity
A speeding up of the natural healing process
No matter how you decide to use Reiki, there is the potential for Reiki to make a real difference to your life
Reiki Treatments
Receiving Reiki from a practitioner is a simple process. The client lies on a treatment table, or sits in a chair if laying down is uncomfortable and the practitioner will gently lay their hands on the body in a series of hand positions on the head, torso and legs, sometimes hovering the hands rather than touching. Each hand position is held for a few minutes. During the treatment, energy is drawn through the practitioner into the recipient, helping to produce a state of balance. The recipient remains fully clothed throughout the session. During Reiki, the practitioner places their hands on the client usually on the shoulders and remains there for the duration of the session.
What Does a Reiki Treatment Feel Like?
Receiving Reiki is a very simple process, but usually produces quite profound effects. The Reiki treatment begins by you lying down on a treatment couch. You remain fully clothed, but you may be more comfortable if you remove your shoes, or a belt, or big earrings. You close your eyes and most practitioners will have some gentle, relaxing music playing in the background for you to listen to.
As the energy flows, most people will feel warmth, or heat, or tingling from the Practitioner’s hands. It is usually a very relaxing experience: some people fall asleep. Other sensations may include seeing coloured lights or feeling as if you are floating. Sometimes people have an “emotional release” – feeling quite emotional or tearful for a little while during the treatment – as emotional turmoil is brought to the surface to be released and dissipated. It varies a lot from one person to another.
How many Usui Reiki treatments do I need?
While a single Reiki treatment will do something beneficial for you, bringing a sense of calm and peacefulness and maybe producing some short-term physical benefits too, usually a course of 4-6 Reiki treatments at weekly intervals would seem to be enough to produce long-term beneficial changes in these areas. In our experience, this number of sessions is usually enough to sort out stress, tension, anxiety, sleeplessness and some emotional problems; physical stuff can take a little longer, but not always. Reiki generally produces long-term beneficial changes, so you do not necessarily need to keep coming back for endless Reiki sessions. However, once you have felt how wonderful it feels, you may want to keep coming back and back! Some people decide to have regular ‘top-up’ sessions, which others might visit their Reiki practitioner if and when they feel that they would benefit from another treatment.
No matter what your particular complaint, the general effect of a course of Reiki treatments seems to be to make you feel more ‘laid back’: more calm, less stressed and better able to cope. Reiki seems to boost energy levels, raise spirits, and make you feel more positive about things. Stressful situations seem to wash over you.
Reiki brings things back into balance.
